I have an older Express, only marked Remington 870 on the frame, no Express roll marks, but it did have the Express style mag tube dimples. I sometimes have issues with the shells getting "stuck" prior to chambering. They seem to get stuck on the top of the chamber, and it feels like the shell is dragging across the carrier. I have to force the action closed when this happens. It does it more often when I drop a round in the chamber and start to close the action.
I can order a 870 Police trigger plate/carrier from Remington, but i'd like to avoid that if it is not the issue. So far I have upgraded the extractor and replaced the carrier spring. The carrier spring replacement did not correct the issue. What can I do to correct this issue? |
| Polish your chamber. I'm starting to see that most feeding issues are solved by doing so. I think eventually the chamber gets so gunky that little grooves start forming in the hardened crap that blackens the area. Shells get stuck coming out on these grooves and what I think is happening with you is that when you're port loading the shell isn't getting aligned as well as it would be if it was loading from the magazine and therefore it's not fitting in the tighter tolerances of the dirty chamber. Clean that sucker to a nice shine and see what happens. |

Another possible cause that's common with old, well used 870's is a weak "carrier dog" spring.
That's the spring that powers the shell lifter. A weak spring will cause the shell lifter to fail to rise enough and the shells will hang up on the rear of the barrel. Install a new spring, preferably a Police version, which is stronger. |

I'll try polishing the chamber. The carrier spring was replaced with a carrier spring from Brownells. dfariswheel, if you have a link for the 870P spring, please send it. Police Dog Carrier information Are you slowly racking the pump forward? Or are you pushing the forend forward with authority? |

It does happen more often if I work the action slowly. |
