I don't know how to tell at a glance.  My friend has an earlier model and I have a later version. It is a hassel to get an extra round in on the early version.  IMHO get a mag tube extension.

I have heard the statement that the newer M1S90's will not hold an extra round on the carrier, but I have yet to see one that works that way.

Both of mine are preban and allow the extra round on the carrier.

with a mag extension, the 4 rd., the gun will hold 9 rounds. that 9th is important on some stages. some stages are 9 shot stages! very little practice is needed to get it down, so to speak. im so fond of mine, which is marked HK, but not pre ban, that id like to buy another. at a recent gun show, i saw one marked HK IMPORT, BUT I STALLED WHEN I SAW SCREW IN CHOKES. this is later than mine and the owner offered it was not 9 rd. capable. im either lazy or dumb but i still would like someone to point out the differance. btw, this is my favorite firearm and i own several.

If competition is your goal, just buy an 8 round tube from Speed Shooters Intl. I do find the ability to change choke tubes useful in certain situations like long range plates.  If you want to shoot open, buy the 10 rd tube.

You saw the "Tactical" model.  It has an 18 1/2 inch barrel v. the standard 19 3/4."  The magazine tube is consequently shortened by one round.  It has ghost ring sights, and screw in choke tubes.  The early HK imported version of this gun I have has M1 Field Grade synthetic furniture, slim forend and stock w/adjustable comb height (angled spacers at the reciever end). It's preban

I have an early M1 S90 Tactical with pistol grip stock. this gun will allow the extra round under the carrier.  I was taught by a LAPD SWAT oficer to load my S90 this way back in the late 80s, I have been doing it ever since.  The only difference with the newer version is the bolt carrier does not have a notch cut in them vs. the earlier version.  The earlier version bolt carrier has a notch cut into the bottom right hand side of the carrier.  This cut allows the extra round to be loaded under the carrier.

Mine is HK marked, post-ban in the 211XXX range and it takes one on the carrier. I love this feature because I can carry it in my vehicle and still have the 6+1, all legal like.
