I have the option to pickup a Mossberg 500, 20" bbl for 290 dollars.  It hold I believe 5 shells.  I have been looking for a 590 for about 6 months now but can't find the configuration and price I want.  What are the advantages of the 590 over the 500? Is capacity different in the 590s?

Thanks for your knowledge!

590 holds 8 i think

590 holds 8+1, 500 holds 5+1.

590 is the beefed up brother of the 500.  I think the 590 has a heavier barrel and magazine tube, and has a parkerized (tougher) finish.
I think the 590 uses the same receiver as the the 500 though.

If you're looking for a fighting shotgun get the 590.  It is beefier and better built.  That is what I use for a pump use and abuse shotgun.

If you're looking for a bird gun you shouldn't be looking at a Mossberg.  An old Rem 870 Wingmaster or Winchester 1300 is hands down better.

Receivers are slightly different.

I have a 590A1. It's a heavy barrel, metal trigger housing & metal safety switch. It's also heavier as a result. Part of the reason I hate shooting it.
I just bought a 500. Lighter for sure. The trigger does rattle a little. Other then that I see little difference.
Both at 18.5's & 5+1

Hold out for a 590A1. The 500 feels like a toy by comarison based on my experience. YMMV.

Spend the money and get a 590.

If it's a 20" security barrel, it holds 7 + 1. If it's a 20" turkey or other barrel, it's a 5 +1.

If it has the 7+1 tube, you're limited to that barrel. If it has the other mag tube, you can use the shotgun for other things with different barrels.

Hey you guys forgot to mention that the 590A1's I've seen here have a bayo lug also.

I've got a 590 special purpose 20 inch barrel holds 8+1. Its the best shotgun I've had. I've had a 500, new 870, and older wingmaster 870. I would like to get an A1 to get the metal safety and metal trigger guard. If you can save and get a 590.

Thanks guys for the input, so is 290$ for a 500 a good deal? What would be a good price on a 590?

There are 500's, 590's & 590A1's.  I have only seen 20" 590's.  There are 18.5" & 20" 590A1's available.  Every 590 and 20", 590A1's that I've seen, have Bayonet Lugs.
OP, YES, $290 is a decent price for a 500, but I just picked up a Like New Park'd 590 for $310, so shop around, because there are sometimes some very nice deals available.  My NIB 590 cost me $375.
Also as a side note, both of my 590's (not A1's) came with aluminum Trigger Group's, and my NIB 590 came with an aluminum Safety, BNIB from the factory.  But it wasn't marked as such on the box.
Aluminum Safety's and Trigger Groups, and Heavy-Walled Barrels are available from Mossberg, and other sources, if you want to get them.

Yeah I think I'm gonna hold out and keep looking for a 590a1. I'm worried that if I buy the 500 I'll end up with buyers remorse for not just getting what I wanted

I like the 590's much more over the 500's I think the biggest difference is how you take apart the mag tube. I have the 590a1 and this thing is HEAVY!!! my cousins 590 is much nicer to carry around, but I like the tough stuff

The 590's & 590A1's, have what Mossberg call's the "Clean Out Tubes", which is the Mag Tube with a 870 type Cap.  The Mossberg 835's have this also.  Some of the newer 500's also have this type of Mag Tube & Mag Tube Cap.  I really would like for Mossberg to go to this setup on all their pump shotgun's.

I got a Mossberg Aluminum Safety for one of my 590's from Numrich.  I know of a collector in Fl. that has Complete 590A1 Aluminum Trigger Groups for sale, and Mossberg list 590A1 Heavy-Walled Barrels in their LE Catalog.
So if you have a desire to make your 500 or 590 more like a 590A1, it's possible.

Really?  How so?  All of the parts between my 590A1 and 500 are interchangeable, including the magazine tubes if I choose to unscrew them.  The only difference I know of is the 590A1 is stamped so on the side of the receiver and the the model numbers are different.
