I have a Mercury Magnum side by side 10 gauge that takes 3 1/2 magnum inch shells. I have been contemplating cutting it down to 18.5 in.. Would I be ruining a good shotgun? Or would it be acceptable to do this? The gun itself isn't very valuable. I picked it up pretty cheap, although it does have some nice engraving on it. I'm just looking for some opinions and input, Thanks.

It's going to kick like a son-of-a-bitch, but carry on, by all means.

It IS going to kick like a mofo (not that it doesn't already). You will completely ruin a good gun and after cutting it, it will be utterly useless. It will have diminished value and not be very saleable (who out there wants to buy a sawed-off 10ga?). That being said, Steve Rose (GunCat here on arf.com) did a GREAT job of cutting and crowning the barrel down on my 10ga BPS, removing the rib and installing a base and bead. We affectionately call it the "Home Wrecker." Still needs some work done; bent action bars that don't want to go back, so needs a new slide and then some kind of meretricious engraving like Oakland Police Department on the side before being parkerized. After its parkerized might have to take the sheen off the wood... maybe refinish with Linseed.

Go for it.  It's a $200 shotgun.  POI of the barrels may be unregulated afterward, but who cares?

It's probably choked F/F, so don't shoot any modern non-toxic waterfowl loads through it as you will ring the barrels and possibly cause separation of the top & under rib.  Finding lead 10 ga. shot loads is kinds tough these days.
