Is there anyway to know if a Benelli M4 has the required tube for a collapsible stock?
I am looking at a used M4 with pistol grip.
I might want to add the collapsible stock in the future.

Yes, there is.

Just pop out the trigger assembly, remove the PG stock and look for the notches in the above link. Promag makes an aftermarket stock which is about 60% less than the factory telescoping stock.

If you look at the picture in the link above, which tube do you have?  Top, middle, or bottom?  Count the number of notches and rings.  Rings are visual index markers for the different positions, notches are there for the locking bar to engage - and are the important thing here.

All of the tubes pictured will accept the c-stock, but the difference is in the number or positions it will function in.  The top tube gets you all of the options - fully collapsed, mid-extended, and fully extended (max benefit of having a c-stock here).  The middle tube only gets you fully collapsed and fully extended.  The bottom tube will not allow a c-stock to collapse - it only allows fully extended all the time - so there is not much benefit.

Hope this helps.

I put this picture together a few years back.

As others have indicated, pull the stock off and verify the notches. Fortunately, most M4's come with the three position stock. I've never even seen the 2 position stock come equipped on a M4. The non-collapsible receiver extensions come on the M1014 (receiver with the American flag) and the 11703. The 11703's are the least popular model since they came with the 4 port barrels that tend to batter the bolt carrier with normal loads. They also come equipped with the crappy non-collapsible stock.

In 2004, I bought one of the 11703's new. I then upgraded the weapon to the 11707 standard. Benelli was nice enough to replace the barrel with the 2 port version. I then went through the process to replace the receiver extension. All of which are doable, but buying a 11707 or newer is a much smarter solution.
