(sorry for the dumb question)
Are there any limitations as to what types of chokes can be used safely with slugs? |

Not correct.
Try to drop a rifle bullet down the barrel. Don't actually. It will become stuck. That does not mean, of course, it's unsafe. Modern foster-style slugs are intended to be shot in modern barrels with chokes, to a degree. They safely swage to fit the bore. I've fired many slugs out of IC and Modified chokes, no problem. Full chokes may be pushing it. Extra-full turkey chokes are a bad idea. |

I do agree with your post,,, and I shoot slugs through chokes all the time. although, Rifle Bullets and Shotgun Slugs are not a good comparison. Slugs depending on the type,,, do swedge themselves down a barrel, rifle bullets are much harder. not same same,,, I don't know if I have ever heard of a rifled shotgun barrel with a choke. unless someone was just making on to try it. You might just find a Slug will drop throuhgt some pretty tight,, chokes. I cast and load my own slugs. and shooting 3 gun matches I would take a bet I shoot more slugs in one year than most people. ever shoot. (about 200 a year) I shoot them through a true glow adjustable choke. works good! Quoted: Not correct. Try to drop a rifle bullet down the barrel. Don't actually. It will become stuck. I'm confused.
If I want a "SHTF" pump shotgun that's going to be able to shoot almost any 12gauge ammo that I can find, does it HAVE to be a cylinder bore/choke, or can I use a tighter choke? Realistic use for the gun is going to be IDPA DMG, so I'll need to be able to shoot slugs, buck, and birdshot out of the same gun with no modifications between ammo types. |

I was on the phone with Remington earlier and the lady told me shooting anything other than an IC choke with a slug runs the risk of ruining the barrel. I didn't feel like arguing with her. I've shot IC, LM, and MOD just fine. In fact the MOD grouped fantastic. If Remington (or probably Remington's lawysers) says IC, that's good enough for me. Thanks. |

The only choke that Mossberg says to not use with slugs (and buckshot for that matter) is the their Extra Full choke.
Conventional wisdom is that best slug consistency is typically obtained with an Improved Cylinder choke (which seems to have morphed into the erroneous shorthand of "don't go tighter than IC for slugs"). However, I've gotten very good results with Modified as well. I haven't played with Full yet. |
