So, I have had an 870 Express Magnum for about 15 years now.
Have shot hundreds of rounds in a normal configuration (Wood stock and forend, 5+1 magazine tube) In a defensive setup I have always had my handgun and AR, but recently decided to setup this shotgun into a defensive role as well. Swapped out the furniture with a Hogue overmold stock and forend, added an ATI +2 mag extension, a VTAC sling (leftover from an AR build) and a weapon light using a cheap barrel/light clamp. My problem is feeding issues, this is using light shot loads and even buckshot loads, so the round doesnt matter. What happens is I shoot, rack, then go to fire again and nothing, rack again and it finally loads a round. So just about every other shot is on an empty cylinder, rack it and load a round, shoot, rack and empty cylinder. It isnt a short stroke issue as again, I have fired hundreds of rounds before performing this conversion, and I would think it was a pretty simply process, dont know what I could have messed up. The only other problem I have experienced is loading rounds into the magazine, sometimes the follower catches on something (?) and I have to push it in with my finger before being able to load another round. Also had a few times when loading a round it would not insert fully into the tube and the loading ramp would jam on the brass lip. Had to unscrew the mag extension to release pressure. Does anything think all my problems are with the mag extension and or follower? Would an upgraded follower fix my issues or should I shitcan the ATI mag extension and just get a reliable metal extension. I liked the plastic ATI one to shave weight. |

did the problem happen during rapid fire? Well I wouldnt say rapid fire persay, but yes continual fire, rack, fire (attempt). Pretty steady. the mag spring might be too weak to push the shell out if your racking during the recoil..which is why when you rack it a second time it comes out..but like the guy above me said, a cheap mag extension is like a cheap mag in a rifle/pistol and isnt somewhere you want to skimp on.. |

Would an upgraded follower fix my issues or should I shitcan the ATI mag extension and just get a reliable metal extension. I liked the plastic ATI one to shave weight. The same issue is causing both problems. There are 2 likely causes: Either (1) the follower is hanging up inside the tube or (2) the spring is catching on a gap or bar at the junction of the mag tube and extension. With the mag extension off the gun and the spring removed test the movement of the follower to make sure it can slide through the magazine tube without hanging. Any burrs on the end of the magazine tube? Did this mag tube have dimples that had to be removed to use the extension? If so, are the dimples completely cleared? Sometimes when using a one piece extension it will not screw on far enough to fully seat against the magazine tube before it contacts the barrel ring. This leaves a gap (inside where you can't see it) between the gun's mag tube and the extension in which the spring can hang up. A 2 piece mag extension (Nordic, Remington, etc) solves this problem by allowing you to screw on the cap first and get it tight again the barrel ring, then screw in the extension tube until it seats against the gun's magazine tube |

Thanks guys,
Yall pretty much confirmed where I thought my problem was. Just wanted to get a second opinion. It did have the dimples, I checked and I made sure I removed them completely. The follower does not get hung up with the extension off. So the part about it hanging up because it isnt full threaded on sounds pretty spot on as well. The part about the Hogue forend sitting different than the wood was also an I idea since it could be sitting further on the tines of the slide, causing an issue that would simulate a short stroke. I will replace the mag extension first and hope thats it, as I love the feel of the Hogue products. " |

" Replacing the extension will probably correct the issue, if it is the hogue then more practice would correct the issue and you wouldnt necessarily need to replace it |
