I'm looking getting another shotgun, probably a 870.

I like the 870  express synthetic because of the price and the 7+1 capacity, and i can modify as i go,  however I do not think this would be good for much use other then home defense.

I cannot afford to have  a bunch of different types, so I'm looking for one i can use for defense as well as some 3 gun i want to get into.  (i have a 870 express turkey gun i use for hunting, and a o/u Weatherby for skeet that was handed down to me)

20-22" seems to be ideal, so does anyone have a suggestion for types to look at? or suggestion on barrel?

Old saying i learned as a boy. "Run what ya brung."  Barrel length doesn't do as much as you think it does on a shotgun.

dubyaSis right as for three gun matches.
Your not tring to brake a clay bird way out there.
When I set up shotgun matches, I set them as close as it was safe to set.
We shot steel,it has been a while, think it was 21ft.
A little farther if 00 buck was used.
I used a Ithaca 37 Deerslayer 18 barrel for years.
Went to an 1100 not for the longer barrel as you may think.
It was so I could have more rounds 10 plus one.
Way more important then auto or pump or barrel  length.
Learn to load smoothly!
Good luck!!!
