I picked up a spanish 20gauge double from an elderly friend.  The first time I took the gun out I found it wouldn't break open after firing except with extreme force on the action. I won't be returning the gun even if it's permanently unusable, the price was a steal and it's a reminder of a dear friend who was not trying to screw me, so please don't take this in that direction.

What I'd like to know is whether anyone has an idea what's causing this, and whether I will need to send the gun to a specialist gun smith or can I ask my local smith take care of the problem? I have every confidence in my local smith btw for most things such as contouring and barreling rifle actions, trigger jobs etc, I've just never had any work done on a side by side before.

Look at the primer strike marks on the ejected shells primers, check to see if there is a streak or drag mark left by the firing pins from them not retracting after you shoot.

This is just a guess on my part but it would lock up the action after shooting and make it hard to break open, then after it was open the hammers would be cocked and the firing pins retracted.

I would give it a good cleaning paying attention to the firing pin area.

it's relatively common for older Spanish SxS's to have the spring break that returns the firing pin back.
they are usually disc set strikers and it's not a difficult thing for a good competent shotgun gunsmith to do and make another spring.

probably a $100 to $200 repair, not outrageous.
