So my go to shop generally has huge discounts this time of year to clear out inventory before tax time.  I stopped in a few minutes after they finished changing the tags.

They had a Mossberg 500 with a ported and choked barrel and a God awful paint scheme.  I picked it up along with a pistol grip for $150.

After swapping out the stock and taking a hacksaw to the barrel I attached a mounting solution for a strap on the grip (fancy way of saying I ran a zip tie through the sling loop and taped it down) and hit it with a coat of paint.

I still need to do some file work on the barrel and rib but for 150 bucks and a solid hour worth of work I am pretty pleased.

I was needing a breaching gun but I wasn't  really willing to mess around with my 870.  This made for a cheap alternative to buying a pistol gripped gun (most are going for around $350 around here) and if nothing else it gave me a good way to waste part of an afternoon haha.

That barrel looks a little shorter than 18"?

Make sure that you don't have to do any paperwork for turning it in to a pistol.

1) A shotgun can't legally be turned into a pistol.  If it's ever had a shoulder stock on it, it is a shotgun, not a handgun (or firearm made from shotgun, or an AOW, or anything else).

2) As long as the barrel is >18" and the OAL is > 26", there is no need to worry about an NFA tax stamp.

3) Unlike MI, WV doesn't have a silly law that says a firearm < 31" is to be considered a handgun for carry purposes.

It looks to be 18 in. based on my highly scientific "hold finger over ejection port and then use that as 3 in." also, look at how little of the barrel is past the lug on this factory kit.

Sorry for the delayed response.  Measuring the inside of the barrel with the bolt forward it comes out to just under 18 1/4".   The first cut I did made for a little over 20 inch barrel, it just so worked out that I could take off another 2 inches and have it line up with the mount for the rib.

Totally forgot I live in the only state with that law.   Just looking out for the OP.

Lookin' good!  It's all fun and games until someone lets you shoot their compact AOW/SBS and you just have to have one...

No doubt.  I am wanting to SBS my 870 but I keep fighting the temptation haha.

I did the same with a $140 pawn shop 500 I found.  It's a hand full of fun to shoot, hold on.

I just ended up buying a factory one that was a police trade in.  I need to get the Form 4 sent in though.
