Good afternoon, fine gentlemen of the shotgun armory section. I come before you today to humbly seek your guidance in my upcoming purchase. Some background: Mrs. Therex & I shoot trap and skeet as a family activity. We both enjoy it very much, and these past few years she has been eyeballing my Franchi I-12. So I finally said "Fine, dear, it's yours." But now I find myself without a shotgun! Clearly, this cannot stand. So I need a new one. I want an O/U rather than a semi auto simply because this will exclusively be to play clay games. No hunting or 3 gun or scaring boyfriends necessary. If I need one of THOSE shotguns, I know the answer. But instead I've chosen an over/under pattern, and now I just need to pick one. Let's say I've got 1000 dollars to spend, and I'd like to buy it new. New is non-negotiable. Elsewise I'd just buy a used Citori. I'd also like something pretty. I know it won't shoot any better if it's pretty but I don't intend to ever get rid of it, and it might as well be nice to look at. So flipping through my trusty CDNN catalog, I see a half dozen things I think I could live with. So help a brother out. Anyone have any suggestions? Love, TheRex (note to mods: Seriously, this is NOT a "want to buy" thread. I am not fishing for someone who has a shotgun for sale, I really am just looking for suggestions.)

On the CDNN site the Winchester 101 might get my attention.
A grand isn't exactly chump change - so I don't think I'd take chance on some of the lower priced guns advertised there (but I'd sure as heck look for something to sell off for another $4-500 and get a NIB Beretta 686 or Browning Citori. You are so close already....the difference in quality is worth it... Trust me |

You are so close already....the difference in quality is worth it... Trust me I got the catalog today. I'd look at that 28" 101 for 999 and the 26" citori 12 gauge for 1300. I didn't see any other good 28" or 30" OU's that I couldn't live without. If you're looking for 20 gauge, there were more choices in the Brownings. That was like opening a Sears Christmas catalog as a child. Yesss! |

The 101 really caught my eye. I can't find anyone who has a bad thing to say about it, and the price is right. Is there a reason I *shouldn't* buy it? I realize it's not a "real" 101, but... If I were going to go browning I'd probably try to score a Cynergy, I don't mind the eurotrash styling, and I think the receiver design is pretty slick. |
| Some of the guys on shotgunworld are pretty adamant about sticking to the B guns: Benelli, Beretta, Browning. I'd really recommend trying to handle as many as possible before buying. I find the Citoris to be fat and clunky. I really like the feel of the Beretta 686's. You should also shoulder them to see which ones line up well. The Browning beads don't line up real well for me, but the Beretta lines up just right. |

Quoted: CZ Uplander or Steven's 512 I shoot a CZ Canvasback (Huglu, I think) all last trap season and it was...ok. But the "hinge catch" wouldn't stay "open" when you opened the action, and so you had to flip the lever whenever you wanted to close the frickin' thing. Annoying as all get-out. Shot pretty well with it though. Just not as nice as I want. Is the Uplander different? |

Why is new non-negotiable? $1,000 is a fine price range for a used gun. New you're in no-man's land between the crap and the lower end good stuff.
Price alone should not be a factor, nor should "pretty" Stock on Berettas and Brownings and others are made very different from the factory. Try them and see what fits you best. I, for instance, LOATE Citori stocks, but I can pick up almost any Beretta off the shelf and it fits me fine. |

I picked up a Cynergy today, it fit pretty good. Not the first time I'd held one, but the first time I'd considered one seriously. It was pretty sweet, but I'm not sure I could get one for ~1200. I didn't like the Citori, it felt...awkward. Front-heavy. Just didn't feel right. A buddy is trying to talk me into an SX3 also. I've always liked those, but it invalidates the whole point of this thread. Thoughts?

Over Unders are one class of gun I would save a little longer and buy the Beretta or Browning.
Like you said you could find a used Citori and that would be a great gun Quoted:

He is not a heavy volume shooter but has not had any problems. It is unfortunate but 1K is not getting you much in a O/U these days. Come to think of it 1K not getting you much in a auto loader either. |

Quoted: I dont hear many good things about the Franchi O/U's I guess because Franchi doesn't say much about their O/U's, considering I can't find them on their website at all... :( I think 16-1700 bucks is just more than I care to spend. It's not more than I am *able* to spend, it's just more than I *want* to spend. Anyone got something bad to say about this 101? I'm about to pull the trigger.... |
