Greetings.
I am trying to build up my self defense/survival equipment.  As I understand it, the modified choke that comes on the Benelli M4 is decent for most things.  However, I would like to set myself up for a survival situation and have multiple choke tubes to choose from.  I am thinking perhaps one for shooting rifled slugs for deer,  one for bird/duck/chicken (grin) hunting, etc etc.  Does anyone have a brand and model of ones they have purchased to make their M4 versatile with perhaps survival in mind?  Thanks!

I just ordered my Benelli M4 today. I was going to stick with a set of Benelli chokes for my shotgun kit. Actually, I was going to just get a full choke for longer shots and maybe an improved modified for the middle ground. Mainly I was going to just take my time and do a lot of patterning with different chokes and loads. That way I can figure out what my gun does with what and which distance. This was just the method that I was going to do, but I am by no means an expert, just an enthusiast.

Just use the factory chokes. Besides Mod choke is a good middle ground between full and cyl. If your really want chokes then get the factory Benelli ones, or the Beretta Mobile chokes.

By the way rifled slugs don't require special chokes. They are meant for smoothbore. In fact Mod chokes work the best on rifled slugs.

The choke that came with it works fine for me, everything from clays to slugs at a distance.  Check it out first, you might be surprised how well it works.

OK, here's another question: How tight are your buckshot patterns with the factory M4 at 25 yards or further? What kind of choke are you using? IC, modified or full? Benelli only offers std and extended chokes for the M4. I know there are a few third party makers of "tactical chokes", but I can't find the link right now.

I recently purchased the Magpul Dynamic Shotgun DVD, and they point out that one should recognize the variation in patterns that occur from 7 to 25 yards or beyond with any given load. It's something obvious to anyone here who Turkey hunts, but a lot of people don't discuss it when talking about tactical shotguns. Everyone assumes buckshot makes a small ragged hole(s).

Thanks

my benelli works great with the mod choke.  with buckshot (00 rem)  all pellets in 30 in cir at 35 yards.  slugs shoot a 5 in group @ 100 with open sights

IMHO you should see if  you like the patterning from your factory choke.  For a survival situation you want to keep your setup as simple as possible, one good all around choke.

I would say just get to know how that choke shoots before you go purchasing anything. Just my two cents.
