As long as the gun is in good shape, you can shoot any STANDARD load of birdshot, buckshot, or slugs safely.
The correct slugs would be standard rifled slugs. The sabot slugs are designed for use in shotguns with rifled barrels. While they aren't unsafe to shoot in your gun, accuracy would be poor. You should not shoot steel shot or any shells that are longer than the type the gun was made for. In those days the gun would probably have been made for the standard 2 3/4" shells. This means NO 3" or 3 1/2" shells. The length of shells the gun was made to shoot will probably be marked on the barrels. |
| The Wheel covered it. The only thing I would add is that since you stated you know little about shotguns is that having someone who knows check the gun to assure it is safe to shoot would be a good idea. Not much can go wrong with that type of weapon but checking it out before shooting it is always a good idea when you are not sure. |
