Specifically Trijicon night sight ghost ring. Low light conditions, home defense. What say the hive?

I prefer ghost ring sights like on my 590, 590A1 and 1187P.

Ghost rings are a lot better, but a beads are cheap. For and HD shotgun I would rather put my money on a good weapon light over sights. But if you already have the good weapon light, get the ghost rings.

I'm a big fan of GRS. Originally I thought they would be great for HD ( and they are) but after spending a lot more time shooting both GRS and beaded shotguns, I find I am a bit faster with a bead.

I agree beads are faster but GRs are more precise.

A shotgun is not a rifle.

Bead for me

While my preference is rifle sights on a shotgun; I'd take GRS over a bead if I had the choice. The mossberg ghost rings I don't care for too much though...

For HD distances, a bead be all yee need. Unless you have a larger rural property, then go for the ghost ring sights.

I too find beads WAY faster.

A 3-gunner in my area told me that beads were faster for close shots and a ghost ring was preferred for long slug shots. Made sense to me.

And rifle sights may be the perfect compromise!

In a HD situation, if you are taking a shot so long that requires GRS, then you are likely to be on the wrong side of the law, as viewed from a self-defense perspective. However, if one or more BGs are firing at you from a distance, and you need to stop the threat, then GRS would probably be of benefit. Then again, a centerfire rifle would probably be better suited for the task.

*EDIT - fix typo

Assuming that the bead sighted shotgun shoots to point of aim, and thats a BIG assumption, a tritium bead is fine for home defense.

The biggest flaw of the bead sight is the inability to zero the shotgun with your specific slug load.

IMO, Ghost Ring sights on a shotgun are one of those inventions that no one needs.

If you are shooting slugs, the MOST distance you will be going for will be 100yds. At that range, with just a little practice, you can make accurate hits on a soda can sized target.

IMO, get a good, bright front bead, or strip,
Then, get a 10/22 rear sight and mount it. Fold it out of the way tilll you need it.

This seems to be the hot 3-gun setup now.

Really?

How are they mounting a 10/22 sight on an 870?

Typically they are milled into the vent rib on Benelli barrels.  I suppose that such a thing would be possible
on 870 barrels as well?

There may be pictures on Enos' forum.  I was talking with the Area 5 USPSA director last weekend who just
had a barrel setup that way.  It was his opinion that this would be a near ideal setup for Benelli owners.  The FN SLP Mark I
already comes with a similar arrangement of bead front and flip-up rear (and a nifty sight channel too).
