I've read the first and last page and skimmed a couple others, so now my question -
What is the go to light mount for an 870 nowadays? I have a nasty old Express (duck and goose gun, also a boat paddle and swamp walking stick at least once) with plastic stocks and will install a factory slug barrel with rifle sights that I've had five years or so. I also have a 2 shot extension I dug out of a bucket at C&S Metallwerkes, I think it's a Wilson judging from the follower color. I'm thinking about a dual mount for a light and laser. The laser is for my wife's use, and we have to face reality, she might be safely proficient, but she's never going to be high speed, although her drag is improving lately. Pro's and con's (on a light plus laser mount)? You might as well recommend sling swivels and loops, too. |

FWIW, my current set-up is a Mag-Pul fore-end, with a piece of their rail, with a VTAC
mount, holding a basic, Sure-Fire G2. It's not as cool as the lights a lot of guys have on their HD set-ups, but it lights up every corner of my domicile, and highlights my front sight nicely. I'm satisfied that it will do in any indoor situation. HTH..

Here is my contribution to this thread after using many of the tips and tricks shown here an elsewhere on arfcom.
Started life as a Mossberg 500c 20g 26" blued/wood from walmart circa 2008. I installed a hiviz orange front sight. I've killed a few dozen ducks with this gun in Western Oregon. Minor signs of rust. 
The barrel was sent to Guncat and shortened to 18.5", cylinder bore, and he added an XS big dot tritium front sight. Excellent service and communication, extremely quick turn around. I will do business with Rose Action Sports again. Sorry, I'm not busting out the tripod to get a steady pic 
The OEM stock was removed and an OEM Mossberg youth wood stock was added. LOP is 12.75", OAL is just under 37" I used Home Depot industrial strength velcro on the receiver to mount an esstac shotgun card. It was $5 for the velcro. My side saddle options were very limited being a mossberg 20g. I'm very happy with the esstac, it's built like a tank like all their gear. It holds 5 buckshot and 2 slugs Uncle mike's buttcuff holds 3 buckshot and 2 slugs. I used JB weld per the DIY thread in the precision rifle forum to add texture to the palm swell. 
The sling is homemade with 1" coyote webbing and other parts from supply captain and rockywoods. It's custom fit to the weapon, approx $15 invested. Clearly this whole project is the "budget" route so this is fitting. Alice buckle is the key component 
The only part I'm upset about is the forearm. I had to butcher this part so it wouldn't ram into the esstac shotgun card. .It will get some more TLC and a coat of paint 
End result Ammo is Federal 2 3/4" #3 buck and Federal Premium 2 3/4" Tru-ball slugs

I'm having trouble deciding on the front sight replacement. Right now on the Win Def 1300 its just the dark brass, semi flattened bead. |

This article is dead-on. I built up an 870 Express Magnum "security" model about 11 years ago, and spent too much money playing with it. I don't even know how many stocks I've gone through (AR15 style, speed feed IV, stock stippled & rubbercoated, 13" shortened police stock, but there are more...) I spent the money back then for the state of the art 90 lumin incandescent sf618 dedicated weapon light forend, had the barrel Vang Comped and added MMC tritium sights, and put on a three point Specter Gear (different name back then) sling, and had the whole thing gunkoted. I hung a tapco side saddle on it, then made my own esstac cards before I knew anyone else was doing it. I then had my wife's sewing machine rebuilt. I mounted a rail to the top, then played with an older Aimpoint on it. When that failed under repeated slug recoil, I played with the idea of putting an AR carry handle on it and having a matching rail soldered to the barrel for a front BUIS. It rattled around with me in a patrol car, lubricated by little other than German Shepherd drool and hair. I hiked many miles with it and abused it in sand, mud, snow and rain. It has consumed thousands of rounds, with the majority being slugs and full-house 00. Despite my abuse, it never failed, but I found out what I didn't need.
Now, 90 lumins is laughable, as is the battery life, bulk and weight, MMC is out of business.... And the tritium has long since faded, and the front sight may be bent just a hair. I have a pile of unused stocks collecting dust. The Specter sling has been disected and is now a two point sling on an M14, Federal has developed Flitecontrol ammunition that will rival the patterns of a VCS barrel. The gunkote is chipping away rapidly. The only updates that I did that I'm still totally sold on are the Vang Comp big head safety and the Wilson Combat / Scattergun Tech mag extension, follower and spring, though in the future I wouldn't buy a mag extension with a built-in sling mount, as it limits future development. So its time for an update. I don't need tritium, especially with white light. I only need a two point sling. I certainly wouldn't mind having more light with more burn time at a lighter weight. Speed and smoothness of operation is more important than cool colors, so reducing drag between the mag tube and slide, rails and receiver, and bolt and receiver will be paramount. If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably wait and find a beat to hell old wingmaster, shorten the barrel to 18" and install a high viz front sight, put a WC/ST mag extension, spring and follower on it, replace the furniture with a magpul forearm and Hogue 12" rear, and put some sort of 1" LED on the forearm. A simple web 2 point sling, mounted at 6 O'clock will be sufficient. Some sort of big head safety is worth the ten bucks, but so would a drop of thread locker locking the safety off. I keep all my shotguns patrol-ready, so I don't have a use for the safety. Hell, I might still do that, after this one is done. 
I guess it comes down to this: KISS works. Quality parts with few moving or proprietary pieces are best. YMMV, but I now see a lot of beauty in the simplicity of a fighting shotgun. Just my $.02 FR . |
Happiness is a smoking 870...
Started with an 870 Police Mag with a side saddle. 
Short barreled it for maneuverability & getting out of vehicles faster 
Added a Surefire integrated light fore end for those things that go bump in the dark 
Went even shorter & easier to handle by adding a Sage International 870 stock and a CTR Magpul stock. Also added a VTAC 2-point sling. Not pictured is the 3/4" cheek riser & 3/4 inch recoil pad added to the CTR stock for comfort. A couple of spare batteries are nested in the pistol grip, and this gun is much more user friendly as a fighting gun.

It all depends on your shooting style and stance. I square my shoulders which pushes the gun about 5" more forward and I can juuuust reach the slide. |

Went semi-auto with mine. This was originally a '70's era Remington 1100 wood stocked "Deer Gun" with 22" improved cylinder barrel with rifle sights. Additions are the SpeedFeed IV stock, Mesa Tactical top rail and side saddle shell holder, EOTech/Insight tactical weapon light with tape switch to right side forestock, mounted on a +7 magazine extension. Sling is Brownell's Latigo. Red dot sight is optional, and usuually redundant if the weapon light is present.

I have a molle pouch for shotshells that id like to attach to the right side of the buttstock and i have an inforce WML I’m thinking of putting on the handguard. Anyone had experience with the gen 2s on a shotgun? Any ideas how to adapt molle to an SGA? |
