I bought a used 870, doesn't appear to have a bunch of wear and tare, but when the barrel is removed the forend and bolt come off the gun with just a forward stroke of the forend.

It seems to function correctly with the barrel installed. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

Your shell latches are probably not in good condition. Probably better to wait for either Guncat, or JD of AIP to come take a look at your post.

Does the gun properly feed shells from the magazine?

The shell latches (staked in place inside the receiver, part # 55 and 56 on this schematic) ) should prohibit the bolt from coming out of the receiver unless you reach inside and press them against the receiver walls. Sounds like your latches are loose or damaged.

Looks like you're right. I've removed the trigger plate and the left side shell latch came out.

I bought it at Gander Mountain so I guess I'll take it to their gunsmith.

As stated, the shell latches are the issue as they must be depressed to release the forend tube assembly.  If it is just coming out by being pulled forward then this issue needs addressed.  I can talk you through checking them if you have the weapon with you and you call the number on my web site.   Can't tell you much without having the weapon in my hands or getting feed back as you check things out.  Web site is in the signature line.
