Just bought my first shotgun, and decided to go with the tried and true 870.

but I wanted a short barrel and ghost sights for IPSC competitions so I went with the tactical version. I am so pumped for this thing to arrive in the mail, it is taking WAY to long. hopefully it will arrive by the end of the week.

does anybody have this one and give me any trade secrets about it, like what it likes to eat, I am assuming everything cause it is a 870 though.

thanks everybody

it's an 870. so it'l "eat" anything.

It's also an express so it'll need some break in before it becomes smooth.  Resist breaking out the dremel or anything untill you got a case of ammo through it.

Also, mine ended up getting krylon'd tan because the crappy powder coat came off when cleaning it for the first time.

Welcome to the 870 Club!

It's far from exclusive, but it's got some smart ones.

Not so some 870 shotguns have tight rough chambers. They have problems with WalMart value packs, especially Winchester. Polishing the chamber might be in order.

Mine used to get one jam every mag full. Now since I have some rounds through, it doesn't jam as often

If it does jam, place the butt on your thigh and rack the slide firmly. Don't worry about being too harsh, it can take the abuse

thanks everyone,

I am just excited to take it out once it arrives, I already picked up a 100 rd federal value back of target loads that I plan on burning though as fast as possible.

figured I can't go wrong with the 870

Huh??  Jam?  I've only bought 2 new and own 4 but haven't had any trouble with jams.  About the only thing special I did was break down fully and clean it before I took it out shooting.  A day of skeet seems like a wonderful way to break in a new 870

Be patient on the waiting, it sucks but it will be over soon.  I just got a 1973 vintage Wingmaster off Gunbroker, and the wait was murderous.  But you know, there's nothing like a tried and true classic when you feel that silky smooth pump glide

ETA: My new models were 870 Express models and say so on the receiver.  One used one is an Express, the other is a Wingmaster.

You will have finish problems with that model, no big deal there is a tread on the shotgun form that tells you how to take care of it.

Huh?? Jam?

I see these thread post all the time on different forums, shells sticking in the chamber of an 870. It's a common problem.

Another 870 having QC Problems:

Guess ya learn something everyday.  It appears I've just been lucky, as have my friends...

Will add that to the kitbag.  Thanks for the heads up!

Here is another recent one. I see these threads all the time.

WingMaster Jamming!

The "tight" chambers seem to be a fairly common problem these days but only happens with the cheap ammo and at least for me, eventually goes away after you shoot it for a while. If the jamming occurs only once in a while, don't worry about it - smack it on its buttstock and move on.

Don't worry about it unless it's a Go To Home Defense shotgun. I would like to see Remington address this QC issue.  If some type of disaster happens you are not going to be able to pick and choose what shells your shotgun likes.

I have a 870 tactical and that f$#ker is smooth as hell.
No issues yet, I'm about 1200 rounds in.
Smoother (trigger, slide, etc) than I thought it would be.

I have a P model too, as well as another tactical model in 1100 guise.

Got another - 870 Express HD - on the way.

I do like the tactical models, just didn't need the finish on my final (yeah right ) 870

I have an Express I had redone with a parkerizing basecoat and a duracoat finish.  It looks pretty slick and really brought the 870 to life.  That, and the last owner wasn't as careful as I am, so she's starting fresh

He should be ok if he got the one with the factory XS ghost ring. Its finish is different than the other similar 870 tac that just came out (without the ghost ring). I got the one he has, and so far mine is ok. Its not that smooth grayish finish like the one they stripped in that other thread. Its more of a black dusted finish... idk, mine is ok.

so it finally came yesterday.

yes this one is the one with the Ghost rings so it has the black finish not they grey one if that makes much of a difference

so I took it out and shot some cheapo federal trap loads just to feel her out and she cycled it flawlessly. it was nice and smooth.

I have a feeling this gun is going to get used a lot in the while

thanks everyone for you opinions abd feedback on this gun

Glad you like it.  I've been very happy with mine.

When I first received it, and tested it, it jammed consistently; shells stuck in the chamber.

I sent it in for warranty work and got it back in two weeks.  I almost think I received it the same week that I shipped it out.  In any event, it came back FAST and it's worked perfectly ever since.

So, if you have problems, don't be afraid to deal with Remington to resolve them.  If not, you'll be very happy with it.

The Federal low recoil buckshot is great ammo for it.

You could be right I thought it was both but I hope not because I have one on order with the ghost ring sites too... That makes me feel better. Thanks.

The Winchester Universals are shitty shells period. I have seen them choke up no less than 7 different 870s (Express, Police, and Wingmaster). That is not rough chambers as some of the 870s have had literally several thousands of shells through them with no FTEs at all.

Plus most of the time with NIB 870s, the new owners fail to clean the factory preservative out of the chamber. Which in turn leads to many cheaper shells sticking in the chamber.
