what kind of barrel would be the best choice for a tactical shotgun that im going to be shooting both slugs and buck out of. does it screw up the rifling if you shoot buckshot out a rifled barrel? and i guess the performance of slugs in a smooth bore is not very good. what do yall use on your tactica/defensive shotguns?
Thanks |

Well... most shotguns you can get a short barrel for HD... and swap out a longer rifled barrel for hunting.
It's bad juju to shoot buckshot out of a rifled barrel... however... you can get Rifled Slugs and shoot them out of a smooth bore with decent enough accuracy. |

Don't use a rifled barrel with buckshot. You can use it and it shouldn't mess up the riffling, but the pattern will be really spread out instead of nice and tight.
You can grab an old barrel or a new one to fit your gun. If you want it to have chokes on the barrel and it doesn't accept them, a guy on here called GunCat can shorten and thread the barrel for chokes if you so desire. Use a Modified choke. It will give you a good HD pattern and allows you to shoot rifled slugs. Shoot only rifled slugs out of a smooth bore barrel, not Sabot. 18"-20" is good for HD, you can get the barrel shortened to 22"-23" and use it for hunting as well. You might be able to find a barrel online that will be the length you want. And it might accept chokes, which is always a plus |

I have a 18.75" and 21.5" shortened barrel on two of my 870s. Modified chokes throw an awesome pattern with shot - it even makes Nobel Sport's patterning acceptable!! +1 on Guncat - he did an awesome job chopping a 28" barrel to 18.75" (to match the vent ribs), redid the bead sight, and threaded for choke tubes. Now I have the versatility of an interchangeable choke barrel with the compactness for HD/close quarters critters YMMV. No buckshot outta rifled barrels, see the sticky. ~cosmos556 |
| 18' is pretty good. A modified choke is the tightest you can get with slugs. Here's Old Painless's take on Buckshot in a riffled barrel. |
