What is the point of the breaching barrel? The thing that matters in breaking is the round hitting the door as far as I know.. so wtf is the point of that barrel? Thanks for any help.

The point of the "breaching" attachment is kind of 2-fold.

First off, it allows you to sit the barrel directly onto the door, so it doesn't hover and move around. Since most of them are ridged or spikey, it allows you to dig them in a little too.

They are also vented, so if you have a round that doesn't go through all the way, it will vent the gases out of the ports, rather than kicking back the gun and possibly throwing flack and other stuff back at you.

you can also use them as a "standoff" device AKA like a less than lethal bayonet sort of, and they usually work pretty good as a muzzle brake or recoil reducer as well.

Pretty well said, F-22.

OP, your argument could be used against any firearms.
"Why does anyone need a Class III weapon?  You're not using for .gov approved use, so wtf is the point?"
"Why does anyone need a semi-automatic firearm?  You don't need to kill everyone in the mall, so wtf is the point?"
"Why do private citizens need firearms?  The police have guns, so wtf is the point?"

I wasn't debating why a civilian would need one .. I just wanted to know what purpose they served.. if it was necessary for me to buy one. Im just going to ask one of my units breachers and see what he has to say.

Asking him would be a great start.  You'll probably almost never need it, but around here us SHTF types like to keep our options open - and a $50 choke tube to turn a scattergun into a deadly entry tool is too cool of a thing to pass up

The most prominent reason is that breaching rounds cannot be used on contact, meaning if you used a conventional barrel and pressed it up against the lock, your barrel may burst when you first that breaching round. To counter this SWAT is trained to fire the round a couple of inches from the lock, the breaching barrel makes sure that the officer adheres to this rule. See breaching rounds use powdered metal to minimize fragmentation, once the powder from the shot cup is dispersed it needs somewhere to go to quickly lose its energy, if you put your conventional barrel on the lock, the powder will stay in that barrel and not disperse that powder will transmit its energy to your barrel and damage it.
