Purchased a mossberg 590 and it says it holds 6 rounds.  however, it only holds two and when i try to get the third shell in it goes in halfway and just stops like something is blocking the way.

any ideas??

I have no idea why it would be, the guys at the gun shop said it holds 6 rounds....

it sounds like someone plugged it for hunting..

Dude, just unscrew the endcap and take the spring out and see if it has a dowel jammed in the tube.

I have a 590 myself and it actually holds 7x 2 3/4 12 ga. shells.  Does the tube go all the way to the end of the barrel? I assume so if it's like my 590.

The tube should extend to the end like this:

Your above 590 should hold 8 +  1  2/34" shells like mine does.  3" shells brings it down to 7 + 1.

Hold onto that dowl.  You may want to hunt waterfowl one day, and without that dowl, you are in violation of the law.

Woops, yeah sorry I have 3" shells in there currently

And, they're S&B max load 00 buckshot - and clearly printed on the side of them is 2 3/4 haha, but they're 3 inchers.

Does Mossberg really assume that someone is going to waterfowl hunt with an 18' or 20' barreled shotgun.

No kidding.  Mine didn't have a dowel in it when it came from the factory.

There's probably someone out there that has tried waterfowl hunting with a Mossberg AOW or SBS.

Keep in mind that not every mfr makes shells the same length.  They can vary by as much as 1/4" in length from their advertised length.  Also, when I replaced the OE shell follower with a High-Visibility one and replaced the weak OE Mossberg magazine springs with Wolff +10% springs I really had to play with the spring length to get back to the original capacity.  In the end I settled on losing one round, with certain over-length shells, to gain the extra magazine spring strength and reliability.  To remedy that capacity loss I will buy or make some slightly extended mag tube end caps.

Not necessarilly, but when they mate the mag tube to the receiver they do not necessarily know what the final configuration of the shotgun will be, so sometimes they install the plug on an entire run.  yeah, it's odd, but it's come up several times before.
