| I am ready to buy a shotgun and turn it tactical. My dilema is which gun. I can get a Maverick right now for $147 or a 870 for $279. I would then change barrels....stocks....etc...Which one would ya'll go with? |

I had the same problem buddy, after looking at many retailer sites on which accessories to buy and how abundant they are, my choice was the 870..........there was no other! I just purchased the 870 Express tactical w/ breacher last week and now I am waiting for my order from Brownells full of tactical goodness.....I think the model number was 81200.....I could be wrong, look it up and see. Everything must people buy in a few months or years I went ahead and ordered everything now as I hate not having what I wanted right then and there........I guess I will have to do that from now on. I think I kinda messed up when I purchased the ATI top folding stock instead of the factory Remington stock but the price of that stock as they dont make it anymore is almost ridiculous, I might have to pick one up for it anyways. Anyways, pick up the 870 and dont look back. |

The biggest difference is controls location, and the Maverick has a safety in the trigger like the 870 so that's pretty much moot. I'm a Mossberg fan completely (because of the controls location) but I wouldn't pick the Maverick over the 870. I would, and have, pick the 500, 590 and 835 over the 870 however.
I guess I'm saying that a more fair comparison is the 590 or 500, not the Maverick. IMO anyway. |

Mossberg 500/590 for pump, 930 for auto. The 500 and 590 are 97% reliable...............however, the 930's are 50/50...............I would not trust any 930 with my life! Friend bought one and would not cycle MOST birdshot type shells.... and when it did shot them, they all got stuck in the chamber and had to bang the butt-stock on the ground while pulling the charging handle down. They came out most of the time but sometimes we had to use a cleaning rod and tap them out. Oh, did I mention that it also had the left 'Leaning Tower of Pisa' sight. Gun was only in his possession for about three weeks and it was gone, he was more excited to sell it then he was to buy it. I would never even think about purchasing a 930-SPX................. well, I might pay half price, but only if it went through the Mossberg custom shop first........

And where you get your 500/590 reliability percentage, I'll never know. I have personally owned two 500s and one 590; all three were flawless. Not to mention all the 500/590s I have come across from friends, relatives and fellow shooters. I have never personally known anyone to have an issue with a 500/590 pump...the only bad stuff I have ever read about has been on the internet. Take it for what it's worth. |
