Can someone explain to me the select slug drill? I understand you eject the chambered round and load a slug, but I'm fuzzy on the actual technique. Simply working the slide to the rear would eject the first round, but then put another round on the shell carrier ready to feed into the chamber. I'm missing a step, I just don't know what it is.

ETA: I have a Rem 870 by the way.

Ahh, a fellow 870 guy!

FWIW, here's how I practice the single slug drill:

I, out of habit, keep my mag tube topped off with the chamber empty, aka 'condition 3.'
So, when I shoulder the gun the first thing to do is chamber the first shell, of course.

Now, if a slug is needed, there's at least one shells' space available in the mag tube.
To load a slug, I just thumb one into the mag tube while simultaneously using my
trigger finger to pull the action release, then return to a normal shooting position/hold
and rack the action again.

I've seen this done with the addition of catching the live shell as it's being ejected but, to me,
this is an unnecessary step. If you need to switch to a single-projectile shell in a hurry, why
waste seconds trying to pocket or handle the round you've just decided not to use at the time?

This is just my opinion; that's how I do it. Maybe someone will be along shortly with a more
appropriate or efficient technique. I look forward to seeing the answers of others. HTH.

Edit for grammatical errors. Some of them, anyway.

Thats it.

Take longer to read it than to do it.
