Found a really good price on this 1897 today. Serial number puts it in the 1909 date range. The barrel is marked "full", but is cut down. No bead sight. Serial #'s match, but there is another number etched under the serial # on the receiver starting with "MN". My grandpa was a MN Hiway Patrol Officer, and his Winchester model 12 was marked with a similar “MN” number, making me think this shotgun was issued at a state level to a government organization. It also has marks on either side of the receiver, possibly a patrol car clamp? Government gun or not, I’m very happy with it and it will make an excellent shooter. It has a crack down the grip about 5" long which I will repair. BTW, the Norinco counterpart I have seems to be made just as well as this example.
