I...like you, was interested in the model 37 home protection model. Here are some things to consider if you are going for the home defense model. -there is no support for the magazine tube, it literally free-floats. If this gets bent you are f*cked -the barrel is non-removeable, hope you never damage the barrel as you are not going to be able to change out the barrel -there are little, to no aftermarket parts available. (sidesaddles, triggers, magazine tube extensions. Your better off going with an older model 37. |
| This mean bastard will slam fire no problem. And it's not because of a malfunction. |

Yes, it would be a malfunction. The Winchester 1893 and 1897 shotguns didn't have a disconnector either. |

You do know what the function of a disconnector is, right? |

Just to let you know, it takes a good bit of practice to NOT release the trigger, and pump off several shots. It does not come naturally. In my Experiance, I can pump and pull the trigger, as fast as I can pump holding the trigger down. I see no real benifit.
I have collected riot type shot guns for a good while, and enjoy shooting them. I have a good bit of "hands on" experiance. If you really want to shoot 12ga as fast as possable, get a inertia recoil operated shotgun like a Beretta 1201fp, or a Benelli. Remember too, it doesnt matter how fast you shoot if you cant hit anything. |

i know this is a bit off topic but why dont you hear about ithaca what has happened to them ? my dad used to talk about how great they were as shotguns and there good ideas. only thing i could find was that Chinese knock offs were being made. The problem is they were too good for the economy at the time. Much like the Winchester Model 12 became too expensive to manufacture, the Ithaca is a quality weapon that is also not cheap to produce. Ithaca also has had a rough go since the early 80s going bankrupt, being bought up then going under again. It's still an excellent shotgun but with the current model sporting a fixed barrel and other changes to the original design, I think I'll stick with my older Model 37. |

Ithaca 37s produced before the Ithaca 87 were not equipped with a disconnector and could be fired simply by holding the trigger and cycling the action. A disconnector was added with the introduction of the Model 87.
I don't know if the "new" 37s (those produced after they switched back to the 37 designation) are equipped with a disconnector. While I suppose it has "cool" points, I never found it be a useful feature of the 37. With brief practice one can fire a Remington 870 just as fast. The prime benefits of the 37 are its' light weight and bottom ejection. I love my 37 bird gun, and continue to kick myself in the ass for the not one but two 37 M&P's I've passed on over the years. |
Love mine. All forged steel and walnut.Very light and silky smooth. If memory serves me I believe the disconnect was added in 1973 though there were some made after that date without it in runs for some police depts. It's alot of fun to slam away .The trench gun heat shield and bayonet lug from the Winchester 97 fits the short mag tube versions and looks badass.

The reason Ithaca has had problems financaly is they are made in the USA using the old forged, and machined steel method of manufacture. In order to be able to make a profit, they end up costing twice what a 870 or 500 costs. You get twice the gun, but most americans just look at the cost.
It is the very same reson you cant find clothes, or much else made in the USA anymore. What a shame. |
