building an 870, decided to go with a ghost ring setup in an attempt to avoid mr. murphy and dead batteries.  would like tritium inserts, and i was wondering if i should go for a mount with the protective 'wings' on it.

I have been using these for a few years on my 870p to great effect.

I don't see the need for the protective wings, however they couldn't hurt.

thanks, was wondering how sturdy the ring is without protection.  i'm not rough on my guns, but things do happen.

Get the LPA's.  They have the protective "ears" on both sides of the front and rear sights to keep them from getting banged around during 3-gun matches, etc.  They aren't cheap, but they are worth it.

I'm not rough on my guns either but I certainly don't baby them.  I have had no problems with movement or loss of zero on my Trijicons with around 1000 shells through my gun.

I'm sure the Trijicon/Scattergun sights would suit you well, however there isn't anything wrong with the shielded ghost rings either.
