Breach face/ front of bolt in close position.. Give yourself a extra 1/2" or buy a factory barrel.

If you're looking to stay legal non-NFA then close the bolt.  Use a regular cleaning rod and put it down the barrel and measure (usually by putting a piece of tape around the rod) from the part of the rod sticking out of the barrel to the tip.

If you are going the NFA route....where ever you feel like.

By the way, the best way to do this is to go at least 18.1" inches or more.  If this is your first time (sounds like it is) cut the barrel at 18 1/4".....that gives you some room to clean up your "cut".

I recommend using a pipe cutter to score/etch the outside circle (don't use it to cut, you'll bend the barrel too much).  Then use a hack saw to cut along the outer score/etch mark you made.  That way you know you have a "squared up" barrel.

Then use a needle file to clean the edge up a bit.  Some cold blue and you're all the way home.

Thanks, I have a dowel somewhere, I'm not going NFA on this one its just an old beat up gun so i'm going to cut the barrel and put a different stock i have on it and a fresh coat of bake on paint.
