I mainly plan on using this for shotgun action matches and 3-gun matches.

1. Will it operate with lighter loads like #6 - #8 birdshot?  Sometimes we're restricted to that as some of the steel is up close.

2. Can I use different chokes for tighter patterns if I'm using light birdshot?  With a full open cylinder and birdshot, the pattern is too light to knock over some steel even at 10 yards.

3. How does the Aimpoint T-1 work on the M4?  That would probably be my optic of choice?

4. And how does everyone like their M4?  Worth it?

1.My M4 has run on stuff as light as remington 1-1/8oz 1200fps target loads. I even fired it from the hip using these. This was within the first 50 rounds I put through the brand new gun. The only way it jammed was if I held it loosly and fired from the hip using this round.

2. Yes, I just purchased a Kick's Ind. Buck-Kicker choke in my attempt at putting 10 out of 15 OO buck pellets in a 14" circle at 50 yards. My Primos choke will do it with 7-8 pellets, and Kicks is supposed to be the end-all be-all of buckshot chokes. The M4 takes the standard (Mobil) Benelli/Beretta chokes.

3. I have seen them and they appear to work fine. I spend $400 and went with a Pride/Fowler red-dot in a LaRue QR Irondot mount. I am VERY happy with it.

4. I am very happy with my M4. It has not jammed ONE TIME that was not user error. Here are a list of malfunctions I have had:

Jamming with light birdshot when limp-wristed: User error

Failing to feed last round in magazine: This one was more complex. I went with a Surecycle +2 extension spring when I put a full-length tube on it. The spring was apparently weaker even than the stock 27.5" M4 spring. When firing heavy 2.75" buckshot loads the last round would not feed as the inertia of recoil kept it in the mag tube a bit too long/far for the shell elevator to pick it up. It looked like a lock-back on empty but with the shell half in/out of the mag tube.
I then re-installed the stock M4 spring as Benelli says this is what is used in the full-length tube. It fed fine with all buckshot including 15-pelled 3" buckshot. However, #4 41 pellet 3" buckshot would freeze it up in the same manner. I have since transitioned to a mil-spec M1 S90 spring which is 35-39" in length when new and about 31" after taking a set. It has solved all my problems. Why Benelli would put a 27.5" spring in one 7-shot tube and a 35" spring in another 7-shot tube is beyond me. It makes no sense economically or functionally.

for 3-gun...

Get a 21" M2 and a NORDIC magazine extension.

While cheaper, you are not taking into consideration that he wants to put an optic on this weapon as well as fire light birdshot loads. I am not sure if, with a mag extension, ect. and the light loads that an M2 would cycle 100%.

Either way, his questioning about a T1 optic leads me to believe budget is not the issue.

Cool.  Thanks for your help guys!  It's on my short list now.

My M2 eats 2 3/4 dram birdshot all day long, and it holds 9 rounds.
That's a good thing in 3-Gun.

FYI,  an Optic will bump you into open division,  which means racegun pistols,  multi optic rifles, and shotgun speedloaders.

The competitions I play in aren't that official.  At least not with shotguns.  Thank you though!

I wanted something good for "social" work that would also work for the run and gun shotgun shoots I occasionally participate in.  Basically, it gives me an excuse to get another toy

Yes you can use light loads...mine loves them.  The M4 comes with a modified choke so you can shoot anything out of it but other choke tubes are available.  I believe any benelli choke will work but call benelli to make sure.  With the M4 the lower the sight the better.  An EoTech sits really high...the T-1 might work well.  I love my M4 and think it's an excellent example of a fighting shotgun.
