I have an 870 i want to run 000 buck thru with a full choke.... is this a good combo????

My first post on AR15.com please be kind!!!

If it is not a good combo,,, please tell why!

It seems the BIG BUCKSHOT with a full choke would be awesome!!!

Thanks,

Icehouse

Im my experiance a modified choke actually gives better patterns than full choke when shooting buckshot. But every shotgun is different.

Why 000 Buck? For the greater penetration over 00 or the lower number of pellets?

My 870 with an 18" barrel that has chokes installed will group Federal low recoil 8 pellet about 4.5" at 25 yards with a modified choke. The full choke did not do so well, I think because of deformation. With a improved choke it will keep them within the 8 ring. But like already stated every gun is different.

My thinking is.... That if the 00 is good, then the 000 out of the full choke should be a home defense good combo...

Federal Flight Control buck gives the best patterns out of cylinder bore.

Please reconsider the choice of choke.

I also have 000 in my HD shottie.  I have a Mossy 500 combo.  I put the slug barrel on it for HD work since it is MUCH shorter than the field barrel.

Pattern your gun with that full choke at INSIDE THE HOUSE DISTANCES.  For my shottie I patterned 000 with my slug barrel at 25 feet.  I dunno how long your hallway is but I cannot imagine an inside shooting distance beyond that in my bungalow.  At 25 feet, even with a barely legal length barrel and no choke at all, the 8 pellets remained within 6 inches of each other.

SIX INCH PATTERN.

That's more than tight enough for ruining a BG's day.

Full chokes are for longer ranges or cases where you need lots of shot to hit a small target (think a turkey's head/neck).  BG's at hallway range don't need a full choke.

Thanks......I am gonna go with the cylinder for now.....but I will try the full at 15 yds. to see what it patterns like !!!!

Thanks again...

Your best patterning will mostl likely be with IC or Mod.  Full is probably enough constriction to deform the shot, which will open up the pattern.

Heck, if you are going to pattern it anyway.  Use all the chokes and report back.
