Hey - I bought my dad this for his birthday:![]() Info about it is here... linky... Including the owner's manual here... linky... Now here's the deal - neither of us know much about chokes and what not so after reading the above manual I'm assuming this choke yet another linky... will be safe to fire all types of 12 ga shells including slugs... Is this correct..? By the way - the gun looks good, break open is nice and tight but not to tight and the wood is really nice - well worth the 450 in my opinion... you should have seen the grin on his face... |

You can shoot all types of lead and copper bird shot and buckshot ammo out of any choke except STEEL SHOT & SLUGS. The choke tube and barrel has to be rated for steel shot. You probably won't be shooting steel shot anyway. Most manufacture recommend that you only shoot slugs out a choke with no more constriction than Modified choke. Do a Google search on chokes and choke tubes and read up on them. A choke determines how much the shot will spread when it comes out of the barrel. More constriction less spread tighter pattern, very simple. It is like water coming out of a hose, Smaller the hose end tighter the stream. If you are shooting at a target far off you want to use a very tight choke like full or extra full. Close in- cylinder choke or improved cylinder choke, medium distance- Modified choke. That's one of the rebadged russian EAA guns isn't it? If it is, regular Remington choke tubes might not fit. Then again, they might. Mossberg and Winchester chokes fit my Stoeger. Improved cylinder means approximately .005" constriction. Translation-- means it will only put around 40% of the shot load in a 30" circle at 40 yards. It's a very, very loose patterning choke. You can shoot whatever type of shot or slug load through it, including steel shot if it's steel shot approved. Modified choke means approximatly .020" constriction. Translation---puts around 60-70% of the pellets in a 30" circle at 40 yards. General purpose, do all choke. Will also handle any load you care to shoot through it, provided it's rated for the type of shot(steel). Full choke means approximately .040" constriction. Translation---70-85% of the pellets in a 30" circle at 40 yards. Generally reserved for longer range shooting. Harder to hit with at close range, and will make small game look like a meat grinder hit it. **The last two percentages are off the top of my head and I can't remember exact numbers. |
You are correct sir, The Remington Spartan (formerly Baikal) shotguns use the "Tru-Choke" tubes (not the same as the Rem-Choke in your link). The choke tubes all work the same way as machinisttx explained. Its just that the outside diameter, thread pattern and overall length of the tube itself differ on the various styles of choke tubes sold these days. |
You do not need a steel rated choke to shoot slugs. Slugs can be shot through all standard chokes, skeet thru full but not speciality chokes such as extra full or super full turkey chokes. MIKE. |
