Who's better?

Both companies will port your barrels...

Both companies will lengthen the forcing cones...

Recoil reduction is no longer a concern(for me at least) with the availability of several different recoil reduction systems for pump actions, ie. Knoxx, Eindine, etc...

Is it even necessary accuracy wise now that there are some really good choices in buckshot these days?

I would not Port.

Porting = loud guns. Most people can't discern any recoil reduction.

Lengthen forcing cone = tighter patterns. Federal flight control has almost eliminated any benefit from this.

Back boring = less recoil. Opens up the barrel keeps shot from being jammed into the choke thus reducing recoil.

+1.....porting is teh pointless!...As always...buy a quality shotgun with a lop that fits you...buy good ammo...tadaaa  less recoil...better accuracy..

Vang backbores cylinder bore barrels to create a choke.

A standard 870 barrel measures close to .728. It is then backbored to .740 and the forcing cone is lengthened. Thus, creating a choke of .012 (improved).

That is why Vang barrels pattern tight and shoot slugs well.

However, I have found that smooth bores with no choke throw the best patterns with Federal Flight Control.
