The 500 is Mossberg's lower end and sporting gun. The 590 series is the 500 beefed up gun for use by police and military. The 500 has a barrel assembly that attaches to the end of the magazine tube with a knob. The magazine tube can't be opened up easily for cleaning. The 590 series copies the Remington 870 design, where the barrel has a ring that fits over the magazine tube and is held on by a magazine cap. The 590 magazine can easily be opened for straight through cleaning. The 590-A1 is even stronger, with a thicker barrel and less use of plastic parts. |
