| I recently purchased a shotgun from a guy for 50 dollars. It is an older no name gun. I know he shortened the barrel with plans of refinishing it, but didn't get around to it. I was wondering how I would go about getting the barrel threaded for choke tubes. Also does anyone know how much this might run me? |
Sure.... but it would probably (1) look bad (2)leave a gap at the barrel / choke juncture that snagged the wad and spoiled the pattern (3) not be parallel with the bore causing the pattern POI to go who knows where. If you have a brake hone than will fit inside the bore you could jug choke the barrel. Here is another option if you have a metal lathe and can solder. Personally....if a job is worth doing... |
Not to mention what would happen if you broke the choke. I have seen broken tubes on Remchoked barrels. It would really suck to break a tube if it was permanently installed. |

There are a lot of gunsmithing things I do for myself, including cutting shotgun barrels and installing sight. I've even threaded the ends of a few rifle barrels, with tools made just for that purpose, and had very good results. But the one thing I've never done, and probably never will, is install anything INSIDE the barrel of any gun or weld on a barrel. Those things are best left to a person that's has the training, experience, and the proper tools to safely accomplish the task. I'm not belittling your gear or you. But sometimes, like you mentioned, the end result won't justify the cost. No matter how hard you try or how much money you spend, you can't turn a Vega into a Hummer. PLEASE don't do this yourself. The cost of one trip to the E.R. will pay for a good 870 or Mossy with tubes. Rob |
