I want to get an 870 for a home defense gun. A friend of mine has an 870 Magnum that is in excellent condition, he wants $160 for it. Is that a decent price?

Also, it has a 28" barrel, is it a problem if I cut the barrel down to 18"? Or should I buy a short barrel? If so, where can I get a good deal on a shorter barrel?

Sounds like a really good price.

Yes you can cut it down, but your choke will not be regulated. Better yet you could buy a 18" barrel and then still have a dual purpose shotgun. Barrel will probably cost you $150 or so.

Thanks for the help. I will probably cut this barrel. I have two shotguns for hunting. This one is just for home defense.
