To get the wood off the action bars assembly requires a special tool, or a home-made substitute.

In the front of the action bars assembly is a smooth round nut with two notches,  You have to unscrew that nut, then pull the wood off.

Here's a link that shows the special spanner tool:
www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=17206&title=SHOTGUN+FOREND+WRENCH

Many gun stores will have the wrench and will remove the nut for your and replace it when you install the new fore end.

You can also MAKE an "expedient" spanner wrench.
You can make a tool from a short piece of 1/8" inch flat steel plate.
Simply cut a section that will fit between the two notches, and grip it with a set of Vise-Grips.
Beware of advice to use a set of needle-nosed pliers to unscrew the nut.
One slip, and you'll damage the very thin action bar assembly tube, and have to buy a new one.

One poster made a "one time only" wrench from a piece of copper pipe, and you can also use steel pipe.  Just cut the end so you have two lugs sticking out that will fit into the notches in the nut.

If you have an appropriately sized wood boring bit (flat bladed or spade bit with a central spur) you can use that, too.  These are available at almost all hardware stores and are very inexpensive.
