My Rem. Special Purpose 11-87 is firing in battery but is not cycling (read: bolt staying home).  It will cycle when "hand cycled" but otherwise kicks like a pump or breech loaded shotgun in battery.  I'm new to the shotgun autoloading arena so any help would be appreciated.

Take a look here

See if it is the same.

About half way down page 15...shows a diagram of piston assembly.

I have had to replace the barrel seal before...it looks like an O-ring.  They do wear.  A replacment set is $10-$20 or so.

Pretty much the 11-87 upgrade from the 1100 was the chrome plated mag tube.

Also, there was two types of gas rings offered for light or heavy loads, with a third set that could go both ways.  The 1100 stacking type rings where used for heavy loads, and the 11-87 target rings with the larger out base ring with the second ring that snapped onto inner ring before the ring set was installed on the mag tube was for lighter loads.  The latest set is Remingtons 1100 type set with a third seal ring that could be installed or removed for both heavy and light loads in the magnum shotguns.

If you have problems with lighter loads not cycling the action, and the O ring seal is still in good condition, then check to confirm what set of gas rings you have on the unit.  Could be that someone swapped ring styles to tame the cycle down with heavy loads and  just forgot to include the barrel seal activator if they installed the newest Remington set.

Heavy load set,

I can't find a photo of the 11-87 target rings, but Rem does sell them direct (read replacement set for the 1100 but you have to tell them that you want the type that snaps together before it's installed.

Now lets get down to a detail gas system strip down and cleaning.

Unscrew the mag tube end cap and pull it off.
Remove the forearm, then while pulling the barrel forward, pull back on the charging handle and the barrel will move forward and off the shotgun.

Pull the O ring and gas ring set and set them aside.

Drive the two receiver cross pins out of the receiver, and pull the trigger assembley out of the bottom of the receiver.

Pull straight out on the charging handle and remove it from the bolt (pull hard).

Now pull forward on the charging carrier round (its the part around the mag tube, and while doing this reach inside the bottom of the receiver and push in on the two levers that are keeping the carrier from moving forward out of the receiver. (one on each low side of the receiver).

Now remove the bolt from the carrier and and go to town on cleaning parts.  On the carrier to bolt, remember to lube not only the bolt lock piece, but the carrier to bolt moving surface as well.  On the mag tube, check to make sure that it's smooth as a babies ass.  If need, fine steel wool will smooth out the plating if it has burs or is surface rough. Also pull the outer ring off the inner ring and clean them as well. On the barrel, check the gas cup and confirm that the surfaces there are smooth as well.

The shotgun will go back together pretty much the same way as you pulled it apart, and remember that you will have to push in on the hooks in the receiver to get the carrier with the bolt back in.

From Remington website:

Question
Why won't my 1187 Special Purpose Turkey cycle target loads?

 Answer
If the gun is a Premier or Special Purpose with a barrel length shorter than 26" it will not be pressure compensated and will only function properly with magnum ammunition. A field barrel or target barrel can be interchanged on 1187 3" guns to allow the use of lighter loads. This does not pertain to 1187 Super Mags.
