I recently bought an 870 express magnum with the factory mag extension and 18.5" barrel for HD use. I have put some rounds through it and taken it apart a few times, I am pretty impressed with the design, but the factory magazine follower seems rediculously flimsy being made out of very thin plastic. I want to replace it with an aftermarket follower and possibly an increased power spring, but there are several options to choose from.

1. Stainless steel - Brownells , Callahan , and Vang Comp
Pros: Most durable option, impervious to solvents, highly corrosion resistant.
Cons: Harder matl. can peen the reciever end of the magazine tube, non lubricating, natural finish instead of high visibility color, price

2. Aluminum - Brownells, Callahan
Pros: Light weight, high vis color, impervious to solvents, corrosion resistant (corrosion proof?), less wear on mag tube compared to stainless
Cons: Not as durable as stainless, non lubricating, price

3. Plastic - Choate, Scattergun Technologies
Pros: High visibility, profiled end to feel with finger if tube is empty, tapered tail prevents spring bind, self lubricating, wont wear magazine tube, price
Cons: Least durable option, more succeptable to solvents

What is your oppinion and what follower do you use? I consider the price difference to be negligable, same as the differerence in weight (unless somebody can tell me otherwise). Are different options better for different uses, hunting, HD, fungun, trap/ skeet, etc.

Springs - Wolff, Scattergun Tech, Stock Remington; Which one do you reccomend and why?

What do you think?

I have several made from SS by Trulock but he no longer makes them so far as I know. They are undoubtedly the best followers I have ever seen or used. (no peening in many years)I am also 99% certain that Hans Vang would not use or market a product that was prone to problems. My opinion is get the SS follower.

Haven't tried a wolff spring, but my wilson and remington springs are both awesome.  I absolutely hate the wilson combat follower.  I prefer the stock metal follower that came in my 870P to that thing.

Thanks for the input.  I guess I would lean toward the vang comp follower it looks like a high quality item

I had read about the peening on another forum, I imagine you would have to put a ton of rounds through the gun before that ever became an issue.

Scattergun Tech for me.

High vis, no way to mistake a round for the follower. Solvents shouldn't be in the mag tube. If it wears out, I will just replace it. It gets inspected whenever I clean. I don't think it is going to wear out anytime soon.

BTW, the "nub" on mine has been cut down.
