I have recently purchased an 870 Express Magnum and want to put a Trijicon Ghost Ring setup on it. How hard is that to do and does anyone have any tips? I will be installing the front blade sight too...mine came with bead only. tips and/or suggestions? |

The rear has to be drilled and tapped. This is harder than it looks, because the holes have to be drilled perfectly centered on top of the receiver. The problem is the front sight. First, you have to get the factory bead and base off, UNLESS you use the Wilson rifle front that fits OVER the base after the bead is removed. If you have to remove the factory base, things get complicated. The base is brazed on with a high temp brazing compound. The barrel and base have to be heated to a red heat to melt the alloy and this ruins the barrel finish. The second method is to cut and file the base off which leaves a bare spot. With the base off, you than have to attach the new rifle sight. Most new ghost ring front sights are set up to be brazed on, which again requires a red heat to melt and flow the brazing compound. You can try soft soldering the sight on, and as long as you do a good job the sight will stay put pretty well. Another possibility is the new Loctite "Black Max" adhesive that Brownell's is selling. Apparently, this is STRONG stuff specially made for mounting ribs and sights. When dealing with night sights, you also have the additional problem of making sure the Tritium tubes aren't damaged. This means you can't solder or braze the front on with the luminous blade on it. A lot of what you need to do is based on what brand of sights and what mounting method they need. |

The Trijicon set I bought fit over the front sight bead and block. I crossdrilled the front sight and installed a small roll pin for added strength. I'm going to do another one shortly. I am going to try the "black Max" adhesive this time. I used JB weld on the last one and didn't have any issues with the sights shooting loose. |
