Last weekend I was at the range with a friend who was sighting in a 12 gauge slug gun for deer season. He has a Tasco rifle scope on this gun. He was trying desperately to adjust the scope at 100 yards, but his shots where all over the target. I was using my slug gun with a Simmons shotgun scope and I was shooting 3 inch groups at 100 yards with no problem. How important is it to buy a real shotgun scope for a shotgun? My friend seems to think that it is ok to use a rifle scope on a shotgun. My friend would have a better chance of throwing a rock and hitting a deer than using his current shotgun setup. ![]() |
I never thought of that. I will let him shoot my shotgun and see how well he does. |

Ill shoot 2" groups at 100yds with my Mossberg 695 boltaction slug gun. But im very careful to use the same ammo every time. I use only 12 guage federal 3" 1 oz solid copper saboted slug. It is very accurate. But keep in mind that at closer (10-25yds)ranges you need to shoot low on the target or you will shoot over. If its a bolt gun, just sand bag it, or put it in a vice and look down the bore to from behind with the bolt out, put it on the center of the target, and carefully without moving the gun at all adjust the scope to the center of the target. That will get you very close, save you money on the slugs which are about $2 each, and save your shoulder from the beating it provides. |
| Has he tried different brands of ammo in it. My slug gun (pump) will it's preferred load into 3"-3 1/2" groups no problem. With a certain brand, which will remain nameless, it will shoot about 10" groups. Make sure the scope is mounted properly also. A loose scope on a 12 ga. is a sight-in from hell. |
We will find out tomorrow. I am bringing my bore sighter and we will remount the scope and try to sight it in again. I am also bringing an extra scope that I have in case his Tasco has gone tits up. The tip about the ammo also reminded me that he usually shoots what is cheapest instead of what might be higher quality(just like the Tasco scope). |
