I am getting ready to buy a shotgun to use for 3-gun and home defense, so I want a pump gun for reliability reasons, not to mention being able to change loads w/o worring about function. I was thinking about a mossberg 500, but I want a pistol grip stock, so that makes the safety on the mossberg hard to reach. I found the maverick shotguns linked on the mossberg site and saw that they have a safety on the trigger guard and they use mossberg accessories. I was wondering if anyone could give me any feedback on these guns. I plan on adding ghost ring sights and a knoxx spec-ops stock. Thanks Dfarm |

The Maverick is Mossberg's absolute "bottom of the line" Super-budget gun made to sell for the absolute lowest price possible. The guns are assembled in Eagle Pass, Texas from parts largely made in Mexico. Among other changes from the Mossberg 500, they have action bars that are molded in one piece with the plastic fore arm. These rattle worse than even the Model 500, and have a history of breaking at awkward moments. While it's up to home defense, I serious question it's durability for 3-gun. You might be better looking at a Mossberg already fitted with ghost ring sights, since it's a major PITA to install sights later. Installing the ghost front sight is particularly troublesome, since these are usually brazed on, which means a refinish for the barrel. If safety location is going to be a problem, your best option is to go with a Remington 870. |
