I have not spent a lot of time shooting shotguns but I have a quick question.  My new 870 doesnt throw the shells very far when it ejects them.  It doesnt always do this but soetimes they just kind of dribble out the side.  Is this possiblly something I'm doing by not being consistent when working the action.  I have to take it and use it in a class this weekend and have already lined up a spare gun but I was just trying to figure this out.  Any informatin would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Put some force behind it, you pansy!

In all seriousness, it probably has something to do with you not working the action with enough force. Operate the slide forcibly a few times and make a note of how far the empties eject. If you still have a problem, report back here.

Thanks for the reply.Tried that.  It seems like if I go too hard it makes it worse.  I think that maybe im expecting it to work like a semi auto, and heave the empties out the side.  They usually land about two feet from my right foot.  The ones that dribble out land about a foot from my foot (that was a mouthful).  Its never jammed ( I have approx 120 rounds through it) and this weekend I'll get to put 6 boxes through it in an afternoon so hopefully I'll get it sorted out.  I'm just more concerned about it from a reliabilty standpoint.  I'm definetly putting off getting sights and a lighted forearm for it until I get more comfortable using it .  Thanks.

I've seen this one before.

The problem is likely a gummed up or sticky extractor spring and plunger, OR possibly a worn or broken extractor.

The last time I saw this, the gun was an 870 Police, brand new.  When the gun was pumped, the shell would just dribble out the ejection port, no matter how hard it was operated.

The extractor spring and plunger tunnel in the bolt had factory grit and some rust inside.

After disassembly and a good cleaning with pipe cleaners, I replaced the slightly rusted spring and plunger with new parts, and the gun would then toss the shells farther the harder I operated it.

Check the bolt's spring tunnel and the extractor, spring, and plunger assembly.

Thanks for the replies.  I took it all apart and cleaned it and put a good bit of clp in the extractor area.  It didnt make much of a difference.  I'm not expert but when I had it apart it seemed to me that the ejector spring is extremely weak.  I can push it up against the side of the reciever with almost zero force.  Looks like I might be sending it to Remington for repair.  Thanks again.
