I just purchased a well used 870 Wingmaster from a local pawn shop. It has the blued finish with a rifle sighted barrel. Anyway, there is light rust in spots on the barrel and received, none of it seems to be deep just surface. What is the best way to clean this up? The guy who sold it to me said to use 0000 steel wool and Wd40. I don't use wd40 on any of my firearms. Maybe some clp on steel wool? I've never even disassembled an 870, so this may be fun. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Dan

Yes...#000 or 0000 steel wool and some sort of oil...Breakfree should work fine. Do NOT use #00 or anything heavier or you will remove the finish down to the metal. The steel wool will not, of course, remove any pitting, but it will get light surface rust off. (Lowes / HD has steel wool in small packs. so will any paint store) I am not thrilled with this disassembly discription and pics, but it was the best I could find with a quick search...(as they say...assemble in reverse order) Remington's site is tremendous, and they should have something there, but I can't seem to find it right this minute. www.alpharubicon.com/leo/870brian.htm |

For rust removal I prefer some kind of solvent or lube, and a brass "toothbrush". Apply a heavy coat of solvent, a penetrating fluid like Kroil, or CLP Breakfree and let soak at least over night. (Kroil does the best job of all, but any penetrating fluid will do). After soaking, apply more, then scrub the rusty areas with the brass brush. This will remove the rust WITHOUT damaging or thinning the remaining blue like even fine steel wool will. As above, nothing can remove the tiny pits left under the rust. After removal, wipe dry, then apply CLP Breakfree as a preservative. |
