Im about to goto wally world and pick up some shells. We're going to shoot some clays this next week and not sure what shot size to use. I've shot skeet with a 24" mossy before, but never with an 18" 870 . Just wondering what you guys think i should go with. Thanks.

The cheap shells are #8's. They work just fine. MIKE.

Federal Recreational Loads 7 1/2 or 8 will do fine. $15 for 100 rounds.

just for fun brother, just for fun.

We're going with about 30 2 liters, 20 bowling pins, and a dozen pumpkins as well.

I ended up picking up some 7.5 cheap loads at wally world for 15/100.

I was really just wondering if I might have better success with a different shot size in such a short barrel.  thanks for the help guys

have a good one

bird shot - 7 1/2, 8, and 9 is good for well..BIRDS, or clay pidgeons.  Might do some good on pumpkins.  The bowling pins and water jugs would be more fun with buck shot.  But buck shot is big buck$.

birdshot is just for the clays, we have other toys for the pumpkins and other stuff

If you are curious, get some 7 1/2, 8 and 9s and go to your local newspaper. Ask them for the cardboard circles that come with their rolls of newsprint- usually 40"- 42" in diameter. Try patterning your shotgun and see which one gives the best result at various ranges. The soft shot from WalWhatever may or maynot pattern well, depending on your choke. It never cycled reliably thru my semis, over and under or pump would be ok.

Yep---stay away from larger shot as it will sometime pass through the clay and make a hit difficult to identify.

7 1/2 or 8 here. With a hand thrower you only miss if YOU miss. Riot barrels are fine for clays. Fun as hell too.

I shoot quite a bit of skeet and clays and over the years I have decided to 'standardize' on 7.5 shot. It the largest allowed where I shoot and on long shots 7.5 has the edge. Technically on short shots, like on a skeet field, 9 is better, but my scores are just fine using 7.5 on the skeet field too. when I miss its not the shells or the gun, trust me on this....ECS

ECS, I know what you mean about missing, all my fault, but I am using #9's for NSSA skeet because at my skill level I need all the help I can get. MIKE.

Yes you are right, 9's are better for skeet but I"m lazy. I shoot skeet fairly well, still I have managed to miss 3 out of 4 on station 6 somehow

I find that if I miss it is High #1, High #2 or Low #6. On any given day I will "decide" that I have trouble with one of these shots. Of course once I "decide" it is a done deal, I miss. The game, like all games is played between your ears. MIKE.
