I am looking into getting a Remington 870, but am confused about the chamber size.  I was told that the express has a 3" chamber, and the wingmaster has a 2-3/4" chamber.  Is this true of all 870's?  I found a Dale Ernhard commemerative listed with a 2-3/4" & 3", is this misinformation, or just a characteristic special to that edition?  I want a 2-3/4" chamber, if I buy a Wingmaster will I be getting that?

As far as I know, all 870's produced for US use in the past several years...at least the last 10 or so...have the ability to use 3" shells. This does not prevent you from using the 2 3/4 " shells if that is what you want. In fact I have never fired a 3" shell in either of my later 3" chambered 870's amd probably never will. The standard 2 3/4" shells do all I need. It will not harm your 3" chamber to use the 2 3/4", but you will have the option of the shoulder-thumpers if you should wish to punish yourself.

ikor is right, all newer 870's Express and Wingmaster's in 12 gauge, 20 gauge, and .410 bore have 3" chambers but will except 2 3/4" shells. There is also a 12 gauge Super Magnum in both the Express and Wingmaster that have 3 1/2" chambers. The Super will also except 3" or 2 3/4" shells. The 870's are also offered in 16 gauge and 28 gauge but with 2 3/4" chambers only. MIKE.

To determine if your 870 receiver is OK for use with 3" barrels/shells, look at the serial number - specifically the last digit:
If you see an 'M', you have a Magnum receiver.
If not, you have a standard receiver.

Remington warns against using 3" barrels/shells on standard receivers, but I have done it, and am no worse for the wear.
I do not recommend it though.

Straight from Remington's FAQ's:

If your serial number ends with "M" you have a 12-gauge Magnum receiver that is capable of shooting 2 3/4-inch and 3-inch shells with the correct barrel.

If your serial number ends with "A", you have a 12-gauge Super Magnum receiver that is capable of shooting 2 3/4-inch, 3-inch and 3 1/2-inch shells with the correct barrel.

If your serial number ends in "N" or "U", you have a 20-gauge Magnum receiver that is capable of shooting 3-inch shells with the correct barrel.
