From Mossberg's website, there is a 590 with ghost ring sights and 9rd mag tube and there is also a 590 with 9rd mag tube, bead sights, and heat shield. My question is does Mossberg make a 590 pump shotgun with 9rd mag tube, ghost ring sights, and heat shield? If not, who makes the best heat shield for a Mossberg 590?

Thanks

No.  The heat sheild wraps around the barrel and has to be slid off the front.  You have to unscrew the bead sight in order to install or remove it.  This won't work with the ghost rings because the front sight post is permanently attached.

Ref the heat shield:  while it does look supa kewl, the really aren't needed and can if they aren't tigght enough they can rotate and jam up the front handguard.  I've often heard from shotgun instructors that students who show up for class with one installed almost always leave with it removed after it comes loose and causes a problem during the class.

In my first big (high round count, rapid shooting)combat shotgun match, I burned my left hand.  In my second big combat shotgun match, I wore a leather glove on my left hand.  In my third big combat shotgun match, I had a heat shield and all of my problems were solved.

If you do a lot of shooting with your combat shotgun, its not a question of "will" you burn your hand on the barrel, but merely a question of "when".  Your average shooter doesn't take enough shots in rapid succession to really heat things up.  Serious shooters do though.

The solution to the M590 problem is to get a heat shield that has a removable clamping piece like this one:

With this heatshield, you don't have to slip it over the muzzle end of the barrel.

So, is a heatshield totally necessary?  Maybe not.  Is it a nice thing to have during a long practice session?  Absolutely!

Hoss622: do you personaly use that heat shield? Do you like it? And would it fit a Mossberg 590 with ghost ring sights and sure fire tac light?
And thanks for the info.

I bought the one I have from Brownells a few years ago, and they no longer sell it.  It looks exactly like the one Armalite is selling, but I don't know who the original manufacturer is.  It's basically a cheap piece of plastic, but it gets the job done.  Mossberg's steel heat shield is better looking.  By the way, I have seen Mossberg's steel heat shield mounted on ghost ring guns.  It isn't easy.  You have to force the front bracket around the barrel.  It's nearly impossible to do without scratching the barrel (and possible breaking one of the welds on the front bracket).

My M590 is a ghost ring sight model, and this plastic heat shield doesn't interfere with the sights at all.  If your light is integral to the pump fore-end, it should probably work, because it doesn't interfere with the standard fore-end.

Hoss622, would it be easier just to go with the Mossberg 590 with bead sights and heat shield, then have ghost rings installed or go with the Mossberg 590 with ghost sights and put on the aftermarket heat shield?

Definately easier to get it with the ghost ring sights on it, then put the aftermarket heat shield on it later.  Sights are more important than comfort items (like the heat shield).

I have a M590A1 and I put the mossberg heat shield on it.  I was not too hard.  There are 2 problems, the permanently attached sights and the thickness of the heavy barrel.  You need to first widen the front bracket to slip it over the barrel from the receiver end of the barrel.  Then since the barrel is thicker than the normal barrel, you need to use longer screws and *bend* the screws slightly to conform to the shape of the barrel.

I have used other heat shields and the mossberg shield is by far the best.  It fits mossberg shotguns perfectly (mates completely flush to the receiver) and it has a spacer that completely eliminates the chance of the heat shield sliding forward on the barrel during firing.

Does anybody have a picture of a 590 w/Ghostring sights and heatshield?  And the bent screws?  How much is it bent?

Thanks

I will get a picture of mine and post it.

Sort of a darker pic, but it has all the ingredients you desire.

Here's my 590 with matching parkerized heat shield attached. As you can see in the 2nd pic I wasn't too careful when I forced it over the front of the barrel. If you are very careful you can do it without scratching the barrel like I did.

Blue_monkey, is yours the military model with the heavy barrel and all metal trigger group?

Thanks Blue_Monkey, that's the kind of shotgun I like, scary looking, but not overdone.

No, it's the standard 590(#50668). I added the parkerized heat shield myself. The 590A1 is the model with those heavy-duty features. The sling is CQB Solutions SOP Sling and it also has a tritium front sight. I haven't decided whether to mount a Surefire fore-grip light yet.

I have the M590A1 and it was a mission to get the heat shield on.

If you do decide to add a surefire forend, be warned that it will not clear the bayonet lug.  You will need to purchase the L30 lamp assembly from sure fire to shorten the light assembly.  You will be down to a 3v light (down from 6v).  It will still be very bright but not as bright as a 6v light.

I asked Surefire about the 590 bayonet lug problem and this is the response I got:

Thank you for your e-mail regarding SureFire products.  The 623A01 fore end system will fit your 590 without interfering with the bayonet lug.  Retail price is $336.  Call us direct at 1.800.828.8809 to order this item.

It's a little pricey, but I may try to find a place that has this cheaper.

www.arizonagunrunners.com has the 623A01 for $264.44, that's the cheapest I've seen and they're good to deal with.
I used a standard 9v one on my 590, and milled the lug off...
