Hey guys thanks for all the info on the rem 870.  Picked it up and love it.  My friend, not wanting to be out done, now is looking for an over under so we can shoot in the same group at the trap range.  Well the only ones we saw are in the $800 and up range.  What brands and where can we pick up something more afordable.  We are not looking for a piece of art.  Plain or even synthetic is fine.

The cheapest O/U shotgun that is worth buying that I have seen is the Bakail from Russia. They are imported by EAA and you can find them almost anywhere. They are nothing fancy but they are built like tanks and shoot straight. They cost around $400 and come with auto ejectors and screw in chokes. Only funcionality that you give up from the more expensive guns is that you have no choice, the bottom barrel always shoots first which is really no problem. Nickle reciever is like an extra $30. Worth it! From there the next step up is a Lanber 2097, $500, you can get these from CDNN investments. Its a real nice gun for the money. Better wood and better finish than the Russian gun but harder to find.

They may shoot straight, but they are not a long-term quality firearm.  I have an acquaintance that bought one of these, and the ejectors, hammer and internal parts are showing severe wear after only 1200 or so rounds.  He will be lucky to get 2500 rounds out of it.  For contrast, an entry level Beretta 686 Essential will run about 30,000 rounds before the barrel trunions *may* require a bit of attention.  If you really want an over/under, I suggest that you consider saving up for a decent used one.

If you are looking in the $500-$600 range, Beretta 390 and 3901 gas guns can still be found if you look around.  My most worn 390 sporting clays gun has about 25,000 rounds through the pipe, and I've spent less than $100 in replacement parts that have worn out.

Good luck,

Bud

Sabatti of Italy makes the Charles Daly O/U shotguns. They are MUCH better than the Russian guns. Have him take a look at one of those. I don't know what a shop would charge but they can be found for less than $600 on some of the internet sites. Try www.guns4ever.com

I have a Sabatti (not Chas Daly) and am quite pleased with it. It cost me $690

You could also look at a used quality O/U, say from Browning or Beretta.
