Just got a Sig Mosquito from my dad, desert digital, brand new, never fired.
Running through a quick inspection and cleaning/oiling job I dry fired a few times. Realized the safety was down in the "active" position, however, the gun still fired?? Flipping the safety up (with red dot exposed) and down (red dot covered) gun always fired / hammer always dropped. Is this normal?? Will the safety only work if there's a round in the chamber? Asking here first, taking it to the range later today to test as I can't really test the chambered gun in the house (wife would kill me, lol). I'll report back when I get done, in the meantime if anyone knows anything please feel free to chime in here, I'm thoroughly confused. Thanks! |

The saftey only blocks the firing pin, the hammer will still fall and the decocker will still work. It doesn't matter whether there is a round in the chamber or not. My Mosquito will not fire a round with the safety on, even though the hammer still falls. Remember also that there is a magazine safety as well. The action will do nothing w/o a magazine inserted, the trigger cannot move.
Maybe not the most touchy-feely saftey ever found on a handgun, but it does work. |

It's just a hammer block.
You'll notice that normal Sig centerfires have no safety at all. They do have the decocking lever which gets you back to that DA pull between strings of fire, when used as intended, so the guns ALWAYS ready to go, no levers to fiddle with, just find the trigger and pull. That crappy slide mounted hammer blocking safety on the Mosquito is pretty soft; if the screws loosen, and it gets off center, it will peen like crazy. Just take it off and it looks even worse. |
