General census is that they are potmetal junk. Plus for a little more you can get a used P22 or Ruger or a new Heritage Arms Rough Rider.

Phoenix 22s come with a lifetime warranty.

And you will need it if you shoot it a fair amount.  I had to send mine back in.  They did some repairs, but did not notice that my grip was cracked.  (But neither had I, at that time.)  Thing is, because of the linkage,  a cracked grip creates a malfunction because of the way the linkage rests against the grip.

I did it over again I would pay more and get a better pistol.

A few years ago I picked up a LNIB S&W 22A for $140 at a gun show.  Last week, I got a Beretta 21A with mild holster wear for $160 off of GunsAmerica.  Any decent gun show should have at least a few used-but-not-abused Rugers for under $200.

There are simply too many quality options in that price range to consider buying anything from Phoenix, Jennings/Jimenez, etc...

Skip the $100 junk level .22's, IMO. A lad's first handgun should be something he'll be able to take HIS son/daughter out with & shoot 25 years down the road, IMO.

*I* adhere to the old saying about "the bitterness of low quality lingers long after the paying for quality." Or words to that effect.

Nose around on Gun Broker or similiar for some moderate priced .22's & be sure to not overlook revolvers!

I have one of the HP-22's.  I think I paid $99 OTD for it in '99.  Last spring I took a co-worker shooting for the first time and I let her shoot it.  After 4-5 mags the trigger wouldn't engage the sear.

When I got home I took it apart and found that the cheap stamped metal innards had worn so much that the corners had rounded off and allowed the parts to just slide over each other.  This happened in less than 1000 rounds.

I took it out of the safe the other day and noticed that the pot metal slide had cracked along the right side.

I've been trying to find a phone number for the company to send it in for repairs but since finding the slide cracked, I don't know if its worth having to next day air it to the manufacturer to get it done.  I still haven't found a number or address for them.

I would and have passed on "deals" for Phoenix and Raven, just not worth the hassle. Look for a Ruger either Semi or Revolver both are built to last and very reliable.

I bought one and it was a POS. I've owned all of the cheap .22's out there and all were P'OS.
Buy quality!!! Ruger, Browning, S&W, Beretta, etc.

I would stay away from those.  Try looking for one of the above that has been stated, and also the berretta neos are fairly priced at around $180.

I had a Raven that I got from a guy who needed cash, I paid $40 for it and it shot about 4ft high and 6ft to right (ok a little less than that )

skip it.  Save money for a quality gun.

You can get brand new base Ruger mkIII's for $200.

The money saved won't be worth the frustration.  And you will have the satisfaction of passing the gun down to him later on in life.  Warrantys are good and all, but suck when the gun still never works good.

There are tons of used Ruger Mk II's/ Mk III's, High Standards, Brownings, S&W's out there between $200-$275.

Skip the Sig Mosquitos and Walther P22 also.  They are just a fancy-looking version of what you are already looking at.
