It's been many years since my MKIII was stolen (1995ish), and I've gotten over it enough that I'm ready to look at them again.

* This time I'd like to get a 22-45 that will eventually support a suppressor.
* I'm not trying to build a competition gun, just something accurate and sturdy.
* I want the capability of swapping out grip panels if I want to.

Looking over the offerings on the Ruger website was disappointing- at some point they went to plastic lowers.  I don't have a huge problem with the plastic lower but I really don't like any of the configurations they are currently offering.

Q - If I get the Volquartsen aluminum lower (VC Target frame 1911 style) are there any internal parts I will need or is it a straight swap?

Q - If I get a Pac-Lite barrel, I will still need the bolt, but what else?

Q - I want to use the Majestic Arms Speed Strip set-up; will it work with the Pac-Lite barrel and Volquartsen lower?

Q - Are bolts and other internal parts available, and if so where?

Thanks for the help and let me know if I've overlooked anything.

The plastic lowers are nice.

I have a paclite upper on mine and it weighs nothing. The Volquartsen lowers are complete if you want to spend the money.

If you are buying a ruger you can use that bolt with a paclite.

The speedstirp is cool looking, but I never minded regular disassembly. It is not difficult once you understand it.

Tandemkross makes two parts that you should get and install:

Disable magazine safety
Slingshot bolt release

^^^Thanks for the reply!

I'm asking about bolts and parts because if I go with the Volqs lower and the PacLite upper, I won't be buying from Ruger at all.

Thanks for the links, I'll check them out.

Gotcha.

You can usually find bolts and parts on ebay and gunbroke.

Ruger sells parts on their site as well.

I have both the Volquartsen 22/45 lower and the Ruger Zytel lowers with all the goodies from Volquartsen and Tandemkross installed in them. While both are excellent my hat goes off to the Volquartsen with it's nicer finish and feel. The gun weighs a little more. I use mine with a Ruger Lite black upper which I prefer to the Pac-Lite set up with it's all aluminum breech face and inferior sights. Check out RugerParts.Net they sell uppers, lowers, bolts, main spring housings, and magazines. Here's some pics of my build.

Wow, beautiful pistol!

Yeah, I found ruger-parts.net last week and ordered my bolt and mainspring- both are here.  All the other parts are trickling in this week.  The Volqs lower should be here tomorrow or Tuesday- I went with black..  I haven't heard from my FFL if the upper has arrived, but he's busy enough that it could be there and he hasn't gotten around to emailing me.

It'll be a fun build I think.

Not sure if this will show here, but here's the finished product.  Still need some grip panels.

Mainsail what are you going to do for grip panels? I picked up these Hogue rubber panels for $10.00 and I love them. Some dull b!ack panels would certainly finish off that stealth theme.

The reason I don't have grips is because I *thought* I had grips already.  I had a set of Hogue American Legend 1911 grips- I was going to just dress off the offending upper left corner of the left grip panel to make it fit.

Then I discovered a problem.  The medallions on those grips are held on by a small screw that protrudes from the back.  On the 1911 they aren't a problem because the frame is hollowed out in that spot, where the Volqs frame (as you can see) isn't.

I want to find some white and gray micarta grips to offset all the black- not crazy about the ~$70 prices I've been seeing.

Search Amazon for VZ grip panels and you should be able to find a pair of Dbl Diamond G10 for sixty dollars. They are great grips that allow you to hold the light guns with out squeezing to give control.

Dang!  That shorty is way cool.

Goes to show, you can really configure these rugers in a lot of different ways for a lot of different looks.

I went with the VZ operator 2 1911 grips on mine and added Vol trigger kit. I did have to trim the grips a bit to fit around the safety switch.

Very nice.  A suppressor is in its future, just not sure if I want to wait until the Feds make them legal (and as a side effect, cheap) or go through the whole trust and stamp dance.

For grips I wanted to find something in micarta or G10, with some light gray and drak gray to offset the blackness of the upper and lower.  lol, it sounds like I'm picking out clothes to wear....

I think magpul is making 1911 grips now- I may have to go see what colors they offer.

Very, very nice; best of luck with it.

Ruger light uppers have a steel breach face. Illogical to use a aluminum breach face if you want durability.
I just don't think the paclite will last with a steel bolt hitting aluminum breach face, ymmv.

Thanks to M4-AR for selling me these great VZ grips.  The only thing left is to shoot it.

A little follow-up.

I went out yesterday to function check the gun.  The sights are off but I wasn't really using them since I am waiting for my FireSights to come in.

The gun with stock Ruger mags was 100% with four different ammo brands/types.  I shot some cheap Federals, Remingtons, Aquilla, and CCI Velocitors.  No matter how fast I pulled the trigger the gun fed, fired, and ejected every time.

That is awesome Mainsail.
What is the best source for the Volquartsen lower?

I already have that same PAC Lite upper and might be copying you.

I've run into the first snag, albeit a minor one, in my build.

Since the role of this pistol is to allow cheaper practice using open sights, like I have on my carry guns, I thought it best to use a three-dot sighting system just like my other guns.  The FireSights will fit that bill great, but that's where I hit the snag.  My PacLite upper came with a rear sight that's dimensionally (very) different than the stocker from Ruger.

I sent the whole thing off to Williams so they could see if any of their sight blades would fit my base but I just got the bad news; FAIL.

So now I need to find a stock Ruger rear sight base.  I'll check Midway and Ruger unless someone has a spare they can part with cheap.
