OK Im trying to find a fun .22 auto that i can use for a little non expensive training instead of my full caliber guns, but probably more for general plinking. Ive wanted a gsg for a while, half because of the good reviews, half because i like the feel of 1911's and I dont have one. Then I look at the M&P22 that is cheaper and might mimic my glocks a bit closer. Not looking for a conversion kit either.

I held them both today and just cannot decide. Help!

The wildcard is the LCR 22 that I found for $399 but that wouldnt take the place of one of these, just cost me more $.

I have both and the M&P is a better made gun but, both shoot great...

What kept me from buying the GSG 1911 .22 is that its finish wears off very badly.  I bought the S&W M&P 22 instead.

No experience with GSG, but M&P 22 is good to go.  Doubt you could be disappointed.

I got the GSG because I have a pile of other 1911's and no M&P (yet) so that made my decision easy.

Only have 250 rounds through it so far without a single malfunction.

I have both, also have full size M&P's and 1911's to match what I am shooting.  GSG a very fun shooting gun, will fire pretty much any type ammo without a problem.  Most mods that fit a centerfire 1911 will fit the GSG.  Hammer, sights, mag well MSH etc. Some parts don't mag release and some sights.  Removed the mag safety in about 10 min's.  Uses the same holster and mag pouches.  After a couple thousand rounds I broke the recoil rod and was sent one free from ATI, I bought an after market SS one and will keep the stock for others when theirs breaks.  I did (heavy on the I) strip out the threads holding down the rear sight But some Locktite seems to hold them until I get other sights installed.  Looks pretty well beat up due to the finish but still shoots great, maybe I'll paint it.  No complaints with it.
M&P is about 4 months old with several thousand rounds through it also, I like shooting 22's.  Changed out the sights with fiber optic front and that's about it.  Can't figure out how to remove the mag safety which is a PIA sometimes.  Will shoot anything but Blazer but lead bullets lead the barrel really bad quickly.  Coated bullets seem to be the way to go.  After I bought 10K Remington from the CMP- bummer.  The slide is the same width as the 45 so my Safariland holster for my 9mm and 40 doesn't work, 45 is fine.  Others said Uncle Mikes and a couple others fit their's fine.  It has an OK trigger (all my M&P's have APEX) so same grip feel as the big guns but different trigger.  A really fun gun to shoot.
I wish I could recomend one over the other but I like both for the purpose I'm using them for.  Remember they are 22's ment to burn up a ton of ammo in a shooting day.  If possible I'd get both, you won't go wrong.

I don't know about the S&W but from my comparisions I would think the Ruger LCR is going to be sending rounds downrange in a fine manor when the GSG ,ISSC and other foriegn made pot metal guns have shot themselves into a pile of scrap.

Another way to go is forget the 1911 style and search around for a used Standard,Mark I or II Ruger and have yourself a gun to shoot for the rest of your life . Good mags, good trigger, good long term reliability and good sights- all stuff the foreign 1911s are weak in

As I said earler I like to shoot 22's.  I have a S&W 617 and 63 revolvers, a model 41 auto pistol, a MKI and a MKII  Ruger pistols.  A partner just bought the new Ruger SP1 8 shot, wish it were a 10 shot.  All are so well made they will last forever the Rugers were bought in the 80's.  The jury is still out on how long the newer "pot metal" guns will last but so far I have only seen a Walther P22 slide break.  Others may have more experience then I, I'm only speaking from what I have seen.  I am shooting the crap out of my GSG and M&P and loving every minute.  When they break I'll send them back to the factory and hope they get fixed.  YMMV

I have the gsg 1911 and love it. I too do not own a  true 1911 but wanted one. So i settled on a gsg 1911 because of the 22lr caliber. I cannot afford to shoot 45 thus the reason why I do not own a true 45. I reccomend the gsg because it eats up even the cheaper bulk milk carton ammo packs. The only thing I dont like is the quality control. There are many links and videos about cheaply made parts breaking on the pistol. However, ATI is good at sending replacement parts, but they are hard to contact and take forever to ship.

My pistol likes being wet. I have to use more than normal amount of lube on the rails or i will get FTE and FTF. This is a blessing in disguise because these malfunctions allow me to practice remedial action since my glocks and sigs run like clockwork.

I never have been able to like the MK series guns.

Back from the shop, range testing will commence shortly. Thanks for the replies, now to buy up some parts and spare mags, not too mention ammo. The way I figure it, after thousands of rounds, fixing anything that breaks on these is still going to be cheaper than centerfire ammo at some point.

I just picked up a GSG 1911 from Palmetto State Armory last week.  I was debating on getting a M&P 22 since I already have a M&P 15-22.  But I decided on the GSG because I really want a 1911.  I do plan on getting one in the future when I have more funds.  I've read on various forums that the stock guide rod often breaks.  Also that the barrel screw can get stripped easily.  Because of this I purchased the ZRTS Deluxe Enhancement Package.  ZRTS recommends using the barrel screw with their products.  However, several people have had no issues running without it.  CW Accessories states their products can be used without the barrel screw.  GSG pro also sells a guide rod and spring.  The Silencer Store has a Accuracy Enhancing Adapter and I plan on getting this if I get a suppressor.  Because the ZRTS Slide Alignment Cone can't be used with a suppressor.  nictaylor00 on youtube also sells several products.  I'm quite surprised by the aftermarket support.

Here are the links to the various vendors.

M&P hands down. Much better gun. I have 3000+ though my M&P and down to a month for my suppressor.

Current owner of the Sig 1911-22, former owner of the M&P 22. Both great guns, lots of cheap fun. After selling off all of my plastic guns, I finally sold the M&P as well. It is a nice gun but, I just couldn't get used to the light weight. Both are about the same as far as accuracy goes. Both of mine were equqlly reliable, rare stovepipes with both. You can't go wrong with either, just depends what you like.

well, I shot the GSG today and wasnt exactly overwhelmed, but i didnt lube and used bulk american eagle hollow points. the bigger issue is that i shot it next to a new out of the box Walther that ran freaking great. for the weight and sights, so far im kind of meh on the GSG.
