Depends.  How available and cheap is .38 Super ACP ammo these days?

I reload for it and also buy it by the case.

SPG has Fiocchi .38 Super FMJ for $16.79 (club price - .45 ACP is $18.31) Aquila for $21.35 per 50 (club price - .45 ACP is $23.72).  And use coupon ($10 off) for shipping.

Brownells has a wide variety of magazines at an awesome price if you have a C&R on file with them.  I'm partial to the Mec-Gar blued or stainless if I can't get the Chip McCormicks.  CDNN has great prices on the Mec-Gars and the Metalforms.

Defensive ammo?  Cor-Bon DPX.  No discussion.

Reload and you can really make the cartridge sing.  Modern barrels headspace on the case mouth instead of the semi-rimmed rim - that really tightens accuracy.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Ammo was much cheaper and easier to find 2 years ago - I was getting Aguila for about $8/box.  Now it is the same price as 45 acp.

I love the Super 38!  I have a recent issue Colt Stainless Gov.  If you plan on shooting your Super a lot, you might want to think about finding a newer barrel and have it fitted.  As stated the older ones, like yours spaced off the rim.  But here is the thing, the part of the barrel the rim spaces on, is just the hood.  So it is a narrow shelf to rest on.

And your bore is .356, most new barrels including newer Colts are cut .355.  This means you can shoot 38 super slugs or 9mm slugs.  I have reloaded a lot of 38 super with 124 9mm slugs with great results.

Your gun is a classic and a good prize.  Enjoy

Found the same about 20 years ago, box, papers all . Changed the sights and put black grips (orgs. shrunk)
Need to find out more about the barrel change ,maybe.   Good find. I have no problems finding ammo, plus reload for it.

OP needs to do two things.

1) Post pics or GTFO.

2) Mail the gun to Heirloom Precision for a retro build.

Yes.  This.  Maybe not so much #2 if it's still 95% finish as the OP stated... if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I have my grandfather's 12xxxx, (circa '63 IIRC), and its a great piece.  I don't shoot it very often, but its always enjoyable when I do.

My 38 Super is above about 6 post and has a 199xxx number also. My grips that I still have ,shrank after taking them off for around 15 years to try pachmeyers, when I went to swicth back they no longer fit. They are made of Bakelite material Im told.
Nice looking Super, mine looked just like that before the sites and grip changes. I did save the old sites so I can go back to them any time, will have to buy a new front site but will go back to org. if I can find some brown Bakelites. The black rubber one are cheap, 15 bucks and feel great.
Your dad got a Super deal.

Damn I have been looking for a 38 Super.  Can't find one around here for less than $1,000,  and they are usually well worn.

I got lucky when I found mine. It was my first pistol and the rancher had two 1911s, both about the same year and unfired still in the boxes and both wrapped in the wax paper with all that came with them in 1969.
It was around 1990 and one was a 38 Super and the other a 45  ACP ,both gov.model colts.
Knowing nothing about pistols or did he, i asked which had the least recoil. he said probaly the 38 Super.
How much I asked. $325 for the 38  and $350 for the 45.
I still want to kick my self for not getting both. I gave 325 and went home with the 38. Didn't know a danm thing about it.

I carry a G23 but if I knew more about holsters I would find one that fit my skinny 5"8" 150lb frame and not mess up the finish I would carry the Colt. But it's a semi safe queen and will go to my son when im done with it. Untill then I have 1k of factory ammo and that much brass and lead to reload.

I have OSTB holsters for the G23, but mexican carry with an unloaded chamber on the G23 fits me the best. But one day If find the right carry rig for the Super would be the way I would go.I will not mexican carry the Colt.
